Peregrinn was a young vulpe but a gifted illusionist. Vulpes were good at creating light projections to fool the bigger creatures but over the millennia they learned to control them to tell everything from stories to dazzle people with spectacle. He was able to wow entire crowds with his tricks. But he was not well liked by other illusionists because of his reckless attitude. He would push his acts further and further despite the rules saying otherwise. But one day, he played a very dangerous illusion that nearly got someone hurt and was cast out of the guild for his recklessness. Disheartened and disgraced, Peregrinn traveled the world. He walked for many years until he stopped outside a small town. Tired of walking, he stayed outside the town where he found the inhabitants were very kind to him when he just wanted to be left alone, he was done with people. Everyday, a member of the local temple would go out to where he set up a small burrow and give him some food. Everyday, he’d either ignore them or tell them to leave him alone. Peregrinn’s heart had grown bitter and sad from losing his position in the guild. This continued for 2 years until one day he was greeted by a novice. The novice asked if Peregrinn would show the town some tricks, but Peregrinn asked how he knew that he was an illusionist since he had never spoken to anyone outside of telling them to leave him alone. He never even gave them his name. The young monk told him that the town was aware that Peregrinn was a former illusionist and knew why he was disgraced. Then Peregrinn asked “Your town knew this whole time who I was and you were still kind to me? Why? I’ve been nothing but rude to your town.” The young monk laughed, “Just because you have made mistakes doesn’t mean you are beyond kindness. If we greeted you with nothing but bitterness then you would continue to be bitter, by greeting you with kindness we thought we’d sew seeds of kindness in your heart.” Just then and there, Peregrinn felt humbled for the first time in his life. He told the young monk he would consider it. Later that night, a small ship landed. He noticed the creatures who stepped out when others did not. They were called Zagran, reptiles from a distant star and they were very dangerous as well as very religious. Peregrinn knew the town was peaceful and decided to do something. So he greeted the small group of Zagran. “Hello there, my friends from the stars. I am called Peregrinn and I am the spirit guardian of this town and I have unknowable powers. I give you a chance to leave and not come back before I exact my powers upon you.” The Zagran laughed at this, knowing that he was lying. So Peregrinn showed off his illusions, at first making stars and rainbows which stunned the Zagran and then creating monsters and beasts of light. Some of the older Zagran didn’t buy his illusions but the younger did. They were so scared that they ran from the ‘spirit’ and the older ones were forced to follow them. Peregrinn was able to do the first kind thing for anyone and all without fighting. He went back to the town and gave a show like he had what felt like a lifetime ago.
