"Hey Clyde, how do I look?"
"Like you've been raiding Kit Cloudkicker's wardrobe."
"Hey, he wasn't wearing this stuff!"
"Well, at least you've got pants on for a change."
I recently came across a few pre-production designs of the TaleSpin cast. Most of them were quite different from what we ultimately got on the show, but Kit in particular stood out. Not only is he dressed differently, but he's older, scruffier, and more bear-like, with a tail and claw-tipped fingers. I get the feeling the producers wanted the characters to more closely resemble the animals in The Jungle Book, but were led in a more merchandising-friendly direction by Michael Eisner. After all, nobody was going to want to cuddle a Baloo plush if it looked like it could poke out your eyes.
Personally, I like the final designs better too, but it was nevertheless fun to see Kit in a more ursine, less marketable form. It's why I put Byron in Kit's old outfit. After all, Kit was one of the main influences for Byron's design. It seemed fitting for him to wear the junior navigator's hand me downs.
