An interpretation on what everyone's (or at least a majority of peoples) favorite mouse could of looked like.
While Gorochu was the biggest bombshell of information during the recent interview with Ken Sugimori and Atsuku Nishida. The information on Pikachu's design and development was also interesting. Interesting enough that I wanted to try my hand at what it could of looked like.
According to Nishida. Pikachu was originally based on Daifuku. A type of japanese cake. So when designing it i wanted to make it's body and head a lot more conjoined to the point it was practically the same circle. Daifuku is sometimes decorated to look like little white rabbits. So logically i decided to design this version with the rabbit theme. Which i think Pikachu's ears in the final design are remnant of.
The absence of Pikachu's trademark cheeks and bolt shape tail are based on the details that when Pikachu's design was based on Squirrels the cheeks were added to emulate the similarity to Squirrels storing food in their cheek pouches.
There are probably a lot of better interpretations then mine. But making these interpretations are good practice to improving my sprite skill.
