On April 13, 1945, the city of Vienna is conquered by Soviet forces, concluding the Vienna Offensive. The Vienna Offensive began on April 2 as Soviet troops pushed into the area around Vienna with the 3rd Ukrainian Front surrounding and attacking the city. Soviet forces advanced into the city's southern and western suburbs by April 8, securing the railway station in the city. On April 13, the Soviet 80th Guards Rifle Division and 7th Guards Airborne Division successfully captured the Reichsbrücke bridge, securing a bridgehead across the Danube River for the Soviets. On the same day, the remaining German defenders withdrew from the city. At the conclusion of the battle, German losses numbered approximately 30,000 men killed and 125,000 captured with 1,345 tanks and assault guns and 2,250 guns and mortars lost. Soviet casualties numbered 38,661 killed and 129,279 wounded with 603 tanks and assault guns and 764 guns and mortars lost.
