I loved Ratchet and Clank when it first came out, one of my first PS2 games, I played it for so long. Sometimes, it took me hours to figure out where to go next though, at least until I got the Strategy Guide. Speaking of Which, the Ratchet and Clank Strategy Guide was the Second Official addition to my currently very large Strategy Guide Collection (The first was Kingdom Hearts). One of the things I loved is the insane amount of stuff you could purchase.
When I heard about the Sequel, I got Really, Really excited, and that excitement paid off. The Sequel (Going Commando) was better in almost every way, introducing new features that would be used in the rest of the original series (Such as Armor and Arenas). Then the 3rd game, Up Your Arsenal, came out and blew my mind even more, it is my Favorite in the Original Series. It introduced fun new weapons with multiple Levels of Destruction, it added Friendly AI soldiers with special missions focused around them, and a fun Side Scrolling Mini-Game.
After this game, the series briefly went downhill. Ratchet Deadlocked came out and I was suspicious of how well it would perform, since I noticed that Clank was no longer on Ratchet’s back. This game took a massive turn. The Exploration for Hidden Bolts and a big adventure were now absent. Instead, every planet is essentially a collection of different challenges, like a Permanent arena mode. The Combat was very well done, the controls were nice and tight and the Mega Weapons could be upgraded to level 99. Plus, the weapons were VERY customizable. However, this game paled in comparison to Up Your Arsenal.
Then the PSP spin off, Size Matters, came out for PS2. This game was a slight improvement over Deadlocked, since it returned to the open ended levels and hidden Bolts. However, it still felt a bit off. One thing I found weird was that some of the accessories (like the bolt magnet and Map Device) were no longer found hidden in the Environment, but purchased from the Weapon Machine. It also brought back required racing, which immediately put me off back then, but I got over it nowadays. One thing I did like was the Armor system. It had at least 4 different suits of Armor that provided cool abilities, such as a Flaming Wrench or storing power for a super wrench attack. It also introduced a unique arena mode for Clank.
Then Tools of Destruction came out on PS3, which temporarily put me off, since this meant I couldn’t use my codebreaker (a cheat code device) to get through the game. Thankfully, I got over this very quickly and found the game enjoyable. I loved the Raritanium mode system, which let you customize your weapons (sadly not at Deadlocked’s level).
A Crack in Time was my favorite PS3 installment. For the first time, Ratchet could move AND throw his wrench at the same time, making it much easier to use. I also really enjoyed the little side missions in space around the planets. Then there were the customizable “Constructo Weapons” which, while not as good as Deadlocked’s system, was still fun since you could alter their appearance.
That was the last game I played in the series at this point, as my interest was focused more on the Xbox 360. I haven’t played Quest for Booty, Full Frontal Assault, All 4 One, or Into the Nexus, but I’m sure the latter was good. Then, they had to reboot this series, which I was not happy with, because I felt there was still a story to be told with the Original Canon and now they just abandoned it. I hate it when that happens (Mirror’s Edge and Homefront also got this treatment). I have no intention of playing the Reboot. Don’t tell me to play it.
Anyway, Leon here, clad in an Electrosteel diaper and wielding his two favorite weapons, the Lava Gun and Pulse Rifle, is about to destroy a horde of Thugs 4 Less.
