The Type 3 'Fastback' sedan, shown with an eastern gray squirrel, Sciurius canadiensis. These are the most-popular of the Type 3s, and command quite a high price now. Officially called the 1500/1600 by VW at their introduction, they marked a departure from both the Type 1 and 2's familiar 'upright engine', moving to a completely different cooling shroud and fan design, different engine case, different heads, and dual carburetors standard, to keep the height of the engine down, as the rear deck sat over it.
