Ladies and Gentlemen, I have returned from my pit of not reviewing for almost the whole year. Yes, everyone, I have finally mustered up the stability to do a review, and what better way to start then with the My Little Pony: The Movie that I got to watch on Thursday night before its official release date of the 6th and let me say, my goodness this film was great. This felt like a good execution of a toyline/tv series turned into a movie moreso then the OTHER soulless hack from the same toy company (Coughs violently) Transformers (coughs violently) But, with that out of the way. WHat is the movie about, what is its focus, its characters, its quality of animation, set pieces, songs, situations and so on. Well, as Animat on Youtube would say

Lets
Find
Out

Story: The story goes is that Equestia is celebrating the Friendship Festival until things started getting wrecked by a strange new evil in the form of the Storm King with his officer in command Tempest Shadow. through their efforts, the Mane 6 (the main characters from the show) get swept away in a waterfall escaping the bombardment. gathering themselves after the fact, they go on their journey to find what their ruler told were the Queen of Hippos (something else that I wont spoil) that can help in their fight against the new threat. Now, truth be told, this kind of story isn't new in our day of society, nor is it ever done in such a way that can make it fresh or new. But with this movie, I never found myself ever questioning nor getting bored of it because of all the excitement of the set pieces and situations that the characters get into as they escape the dangers and discover the new things on their journey to vanquish the evil. The main characters, as well as the new characters, were all very engaging and never slowed the story down one bit, they all played their part in helping to come together in the end to defeat the bigger threat. The story all flows in such a fine balance of its scenes of action and quiet moment, along with the songs that help convey the points in the story quite nicely. Every moment was nicely planned and excited to such a degree that would make even the most Toy/Tv series based movies jealous. All in all, it may not have.

Characters: Now, for most of you who have watched the show, you already know of the Mane 6 are, but for a brief summary of who they are, Ill just say Twilight Sparkle (Tara Strong) is the smart and thoughtful leader, Applejack (Ashleigh Ball) is the honest tomboy farmgirl of the group, Pinkie Pie (Andrea Libman) is the hyperactive random pony, Fluttershy (Andrea Libman) is the shy animal lover, Rainbow Dash (Ashleigh Ball) is the determined speedster, and Rarity (Tabith St. Germain) is the fashion diva of the group. Now with that out of the way, lets get to the new ones. first you have Capper (Tay Diggs) he is a smart alley cat who lives in the city of Klugetown who at first tries to con the ponies into selling them, but has a change of heart later on about it. Next is Captain Calaeno (Zoe Saldana, Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy) who, along with her crew, worked under the Storm King, but thanks to some motivation from Rainbow Dash, they were able to turn things around and help the Mane 6 in their fight. Tempest Shadow (Emily Blunt, Edge of Tomorrow, Sicario) is the second in command to the Storm King with a bitter past that turned her into the character that she is in this movie. More characters for you to discover when you watch the film. The thing about the main characters is that they mostly all act as one entity though they each have their own personality, but they all strive for the same goal. The film does seem to have a bit more focus on Twilight, but it does emphasis on the whole friendship aspect when they all work together, so not all of them feel misused and have their moments in the film. Tempest Shadow was the interesting one where she, in some way. goers through the film seeking them out for her own gain for she lacks a unicorn horn due to a tragic childhood incident that left her horn-less. Now, for the Storm King, he is an interesting villain, and Leiv Schreiber did a great job voicing him, though I was expecting a little more out of him. He was a bit on the comical side, but he had power and it would have given him more oomph to be more menacing. I mean, I guess I know why they did it. Tempest was already pretty damn serious, I was just hoping for a bit better. He's still good in some aspects. though I was hoping for a bit more. While some characters may not be what I was expecting, a lot of characters were certainly great additions to the lore of MLP and serve as great character even if they weren't apart of this great franchise

Animation: Now, of course, one of the things that this film needs to be applauded for is the fact that it is animated in a traditional 2-D style unlike the shows flash animation. With the help of ToonBoom Harmony, the animators were able to give the shows style a bit of a facelift, while still keeping what made the show memorable from the art department in color and set pieces. The character movement is more fluid and varied and has a lot more freedom with being able to give off some great expressions while still feeling like it came from the same show. The one thing that people might be turned off by is that the CGI used in the film is a little bit on the halfway decent side. but I suppose its got to do with the fact that you gotta pull off the CGI as if it were to fit in the shows art style which, for the most part, is a colorful 2-D. So, what they were trying to go for is sort of a cell-shaded look that, for the most part, I say they manage to make look pretty good. If anything, I think the CGI actually helps make the world of the movie feel massive. It may not have the best interms of 3-D animation, but its 2-D style animation is just enough to make it a pleasant surprise in this day of age with over saturated computer animated films.

Songs: Just like with the tv series, Daniel Ingram was brought in to not only write the songs for this film, but write the score for the film. He said that it was a totally new experience working with full orchestrations that it was a new challenge in it of himself, and I have to say, he manage to pull it off very well. He may not be Hans Zimmer or John Williams, but with what he was able to pull off in the score, he did a great job. With moments that are intense, heartfelt, and epic, He's got it all under control. But I imagine you are not all here for Daniels score. No, no, no, you are here for the songs, and god damnit did he do it again. Each of his songs hit their mark in the moment of the story and are all wonderfully sung by the Mane 6 and supporting characters. Songs like "We Got this Together" "Time to be Awesome" and "One Small Thing" are great songs that help push the story along and help convey the moods really well, while others like "I'm the Friend you need" and "Open Up your Eyes" are amazing solo pieces that help convey the characters personality and their own looks on their situation or life. All in all, the songs and music are definitely special mentions to this films status.

If I were to score this film, I would have to give it an 8.5 out of 10. All in all, this films was pretty great, with maybe a few things that I might not have found all that perfect, but I still had a fantastic time with this movie and will gladly see it again sometime in the future.
