Yeah so this one may have been slightly pandering this year what with the wide spread meme of "We Are Number One", but honestly I couldn't help but take the bait. Robbie Rotten is yet another character that I should have added in a long time ago and his resurfacing into internet culture was definitely the nudge I needed to put him in this year. Of course I'm aware that this came about from his actor, Stefan Karl Stefansson's battle with cancer and trying to raise awareness for it which made me want to add his character in all the more, which I hear he managed to beat so all the more reason to celebrate by giving him a place of honor this year just... not TOO high... this IS still Robbie Rotten!
Honestly, even before Lazy Town became a meme and... then became a meme AGAIN, I always liked Robbie Rotten, as much like The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, the true reason you ever watched the show was for the villain. He was such an over the top schmuck and you could tell how much fun Stefansson had playing him that you just couldn't help but love to hate him. (as I feel any good villain should be admired) Lazy Town took awhile for me to get into as when it first came out I was already too old for it and the puppets admittedly terrified me, but the first time I saw Robbie Rotten I was just like "Okay Lazy Town, you have my attention!" of course the songs are amazing too and even outside of the dire situation which brought We Are Number One into the lime light this year, it's easily one of the show's best songs. It IS the anthem for mincing little putz villains.
I don't think there's much else I can say on this that the internet hasn't already. It's so well known and loved on the web that as a self respecting artist on this series of tubes, I really should have given this character a shout out years ago so I'm rectifying that now. I probably should have placed him higher and planned to but in the end, Robbie Rotten's schemes aren't quite as high stakes and cruel as some others in this list. He mainly wants to enforce bad eating habits and he's just more a pest then a legitimate threat, plus... ya know... 4 Robbie Rotten... yes this was also another reason I changed my numerical system this year. Deal with it!
