At this stage he doesn't know Chani that well, so bases his opinion of her on what he thinks all Venkats are like. The abuse thought is not far off... but I want to avoid spoilers :)

She's acted out a few of those thoughts with Desmond too, which I'm sure helped the guys self esteem. Particularly around one little problem even Simon couldn't help him with =P

Why is everyone hating on the overprotective brother? The guy has obviously watched the venkats, specifically the 'harlot', fuck with Desmond and leave them hurt, and he's worried for Desmond like any responsible brother would be. His statements might be a bit ... Politically incorrect for blanketing an entire race, but rude or not, they are not said without reason.

It is a very strong statement to make, particularly because Bella is a Viridi like him. Simon's negative feelings towards Venkats are stronger than Bella's actions, and in his eyes Chani is worse just by being a Venkat. But you're right, Simon is worried about Desmond and that's where most of this has come from.
(May not have made it clear enough that Bella is a Viridi. Is a lot of dialog to put in there without it just reading like exposition)

...Wow... that's a bit surprising, but this sounds like Simon's hatred is stemmed from experience or history along with the desire to protect his brother and prevent Desmond from experiencing the same thing either he or even other Viridi have experienced. Even though I can understand where that hatred comes from, it doesn't mean that he should let it consume him and alter his reasoning. I mean if he hates it so much, why not try to help make a better relationship between species instead? Simon even said that Grand Dame was different, why not give other Venkat a chance and create bridges to better both species?
But one answer to Simon's question about the reason behind Venkat/Viridi bonds other than usefulness...Love. Though something tells me it will be difficult for him to comprehend unless he see's it for himself...unless his grandmother set the wrong example that left an open wound. Hopefully, he'll at least change his one about one particular Venkat very soon :)

There is some deep seated mistrust of Venkats in a few Viridi and it is due to both experience and historical interactions between both species. The ironic thing is Simon is 1/4 Venkat, and Grand Dame Elethea is his role model.
Don't want to give spoilers away, but I think you're going to enjoy Chapter 2 a lot.
