"Excuse me, do you mind if I sit with you?" came a voice.
Danji looked up, an eye quirked incredulously as his gaze met a familiar looking turquoise draconid male. "Hmm? Oh, uhh, no, go right ahead."
"Thank you!" the other student replied with a cheerful tune, slinging his backpack off of his shoulders as he pulled up the opposite chair. The bookbag hit the floor gently as he settled in, crossing his fingers and placing both hands on the table. "I just saw you alone here, I figured you could use some company. My name's Harki, Harki Marcusson. I believe we're in the same biology course."
This is a small excerpt from the current version of The MERVASian Directive that I'm writing, near the beginning where Danji meets Harki for the first time. Of course he doesn't realize that Harki is an android, living in a modern-esque world where such technology is still considered science fiction, and Harki typically intends to keep it that way due to the bad reputation artificial intelligence has thanks to the mainstream media.
Specifically, Harki is a "Freeroamer" unit, or a MERVASian designed and programmed to work independently and blend in with organic beings perfectly while still helping others however he can. He was assigned to Central Midion University and quickly invented a back story to explain his late arrival in the semester.
