In 1920, after months of trying to readjust to civilian life, trying to find work, trying to heal mentally and practical binge drinking, it all just accumulates for Vogel and eventually he suffers a complete mental breakdown which lands him in a ward for a period of almost a year (Anxiety, Alcoholism, Extreme Stress (Psycho Analysis), Shell-Shock, Diaphoresis, Tremors, and Sleep Deprivation). It dosn't help that Albert suffers from terrible nightmares due to the shell-shock. Nothing a little good old fashioned Electroshock therapy cannot cure...
Vogel has never been the most complacent of men. In fact hes down right stubborn so he would be constantly giving nurses and doctors a bad time by fighting with them and objecting to just about everything they say, he attacked several doctors, though he never attacked a nurse. To get him over this their solution was solitary. He claims he spent more time by himself then with his actual "room mate", another shell shock victim that was just as afraid of loud noises as he was.
and the reason Vogel looks so ratsy in the first picture is because to punctuate his stuborn-ess and disdain for doctors he would refuse to eat often/hunger strikes resulting in them having to force feed him so he doesnt starve.
The lunatic is in my head
you raise the blade, you make the change
you rearrange me ' till I'm sane
you lock the door
and throw away the key
there's someone in my head but it's not me
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
you shout and no one seems to hear
and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon
