Chapter 23
Everything was fine. There's nothing to worry about. Melvyn thought to himself while pacing in his chambers. The wedding would go as planned and he would finally have the respect he deserved. People always thought he was goofing around. But that'll stop tonight once everyone sees him get married. She Things were looking up after he successfully recovered the lost princess. Given what they saw her doing, she might be a perverse deviant. But if soldiers ever told anyone, it would ruin the story of their “heroic rescue”. In the end it called worked out.
He poured himself a glass of wine to celebrate.
There was a knock at his door. What was it now? He answered the door to be greeted by a young page.
"Greetings, your highness." the page said with a bow. "I have word from the doctors about the princess."
That was good to hear, thought Melvyn. She had been weak and shivering by the time they brought her to Engor. The doctors could take care of that easily. "What did they say?"
"Her condition is getting worse, and they don't know what's causing it. They've locked up up away from the others to make sure it doesn't spread." He began. "They say the wedding will have to be postponed until they can cure it."
Melvyn was furious. He almost smashed the glass of wine against the wall. But he couldn't do it in front of the servant. He had to look calm and composed in times like these if he wanted the people to trust him as a leader. He kept calm expression, but the wine glass was about to crack as his hand tightened. "Tell them they have my permission to seek the aid of any foreign authority. I don't care if it's an old lady or a travelling potion peddler. Someone knows what to do, just find them and be quick about it."
"Yes, your highness. I'll tell them right away" The young page said before leaving to tell the doctors with haste.
Melvyn waited until the servant was out sight before slamming the door in anger. Curses! What kind of stupid doctors did they have anyways? These delays were unacceptable. What could be worse than this?
Suddenly someone called out, "Dragon!" Then there was a loud crash that shook the floor.
