The Kilted Jackalope

For those whom do not know, a fellow fur,
daedalus
daedalus
made the following journal just over a week ago:

https://inkbunny.net/journalview.php?id=288310

In this journal, he says that he was dragged into an investigation, that his devices were seized and that they contain something illegal. From the sound of it the best one can do is make a guess as to what that illegal material was. At the end of the journal, Daedalus says he intends to take his own life. The same day he made that journal, he committed suicide.

You can find his obituary through this journal:

https://inkbunny.net/journalview.php?id=289683

I didn't know Daedalus much at all, we chatted a couple of times in my telegram group and I've drawn a commission for him in the past. I don't know the circumstances of his death and I don't think anyone else in the fandom does either.

I'm going to be blunt and honest here, which to my mind is always the best policy. I don't give a shit what images or material he had in his possession, he did not hurt anybody. Everything I've ever seen of him or by him has been defined by an attitude of love and positivity. It says a lot about a culture, that one can be so assured of ones life's destruction for having files, whatever they may be, despite harming nobody oneself. Now a tormented man is dead. I don't for a second believe this makes our world any brighter.

A fucking tragedy. God only knows what he was going through at the end. My heart goes out to him and the loved ones he left behind. His death should mean something, it does to me and I, for one, will never forget him. Goodbye, dude.

Condolences that he thought it had to come to that kind of decision...

I have a far differing opinion than you on this subject matter, but at this time it matters not what I think, and this is not the right time or place to step on my soap box, instead I shall take the high road of just saying you have my deepest sympathies of losing an acquaintance to such a terrible thing. I hope he is at peace, and that he had lived a full life no matter how short it was. I hope his family and very close friends find the solace they need. Rest in peace it is all one can say at this given time, eventually, maybe in a thousand years or so, we won't find friends resorting to such drastic measures over such things, maybe,,

thought crimes. they're a thing now.

If someone really wants to address things on the internet that are harmful, trolls and thought police warriors are more harmful than just about anything else.

i'm in a group in telegram and someone said it was CP
moyomongoose

If that being the case, it was not a good situation to be caught in.
Danjen

Nobody said what the "illegal content" was, but in the context that seems to be CP. Regardless of emotion, the fact whether you're a consumer or producer of it, that shit ruins lives. If that truly was the case, I would say no thoughtcrime was committed.

Obviously I'm talking about the real stuff. Cub art (and even shota/loli) are completely fictional and a different matter entirely. (but then you get the occasional artist that draws "from reference" and things get weird fast)

Either way, shitsux

It doesn't have to be PC to get you into trouble in some countries. In some countries, sexual cub art will get you into as much trouble just the same as though it had been actual CP.

...I have no idea what country Dae was residing in.

US, according to the obituary, Alabama.

And yes, it absolutely varies by country. I remember reading somewhere that "roleplaying as a minor" for sexual acts, is a federal crime in Canada. Roleplaying! No source, but I remember it a few months ago.
KevinSnowpaw
6 years, 6 months ago
it also varies by STATE im not sure if SHota and loli content is ilegal in alabama or not. though even in states were it is iffy or out right illegal it is allmsot never prosacuted as it's hard to build a case around

Cub porn is also illegal in Canada.
How I know that is, when Yiffy was still around, I had an account on that site. Yiffy did not allow cub porn, but their AUP rules stated that it was because it was not allowed in Canada, and Yiffy had no choice because it was a Canadian based site, thus subject to Canada's laws.

You have a point if the material is fictional, such as drawings or animations, but if it's photos or videos that depict actual children being abused/victimized, then it goes well beyond a mere "thought crime". I'm not saying the guy deserved to have it end like it did, or that the punishment would've been proportionate to the crime, but I think it's an important distinction or make.

The thing is though, we dont know what exactly was the content. it dont help that an artist here explained what happened to a family friend of his years ago over a innocent beach photo (he was forced to register as a sex offender because of a family beach photo) so for all we know, it wasn't even anything malicious, other than people just jumping to a quick conclusion.

People who claim to be morally superior yet ignores their own skeletons in the closet. For the first time in a long while I have to fully agree with you.

I actually know a person who went through this. Luckily for him he was able to properly defend himself in court and was let off the hook, but it always pisses me off when people go through great lengths to ruin someone's lives over files. and by files, yes to those reading this comment, people actually be investigated and jailed NOT because of illegal content but because of said content being 100% legal. People just jump to a quick conclusion since it all they had to accuse the person.

this is Honestly god awful.

Im no master detective but it's pretty easy to peice together what was on the hard drive of his device or devices that would warrent this level of responce, theres...really only one thing could be loom so threateningly over a person as to make suicide a preferable alternative to prison and the lifetime of haveing to live with that tag attached to your name.

I realize that the material in question, without exception had to exploit sombody else in order for it to exist. However, there is an OCEAN of moral differance in my book between possesion, and prduction of that material.

He diddent desrve this, and im a little sickened that our socity's stigma of meny things of a sexual nature, is filthy, at best, and "fucking burn em alive" at worst. It drove a man to end his life, when there when there should have been better alternatives.

I feel for you roary I really do. this is sad all around.  I know Not everybody that deals with the things he had to sort through is some kind of monster, infact the majority likely are not. I could go an a tagent about how our own demonization of sex and so on is a major contribute to this kinda thing but I wont now is not the time.

i'm all for protecting the innocent but a man is dead.

Huge tragedy. We watched each other, and I've never had issues with him. I've had more than enough of my share of anguish, but what
daedalus
daedalus

I think we can learn a valuable lesson from this, ( that is, assuming that the artist has been arrested for possession of child porn of actual people)  you should never have these kinds of illegal photos at all.

Sad part is that this could all have been avoided had he never got that kind of stuff. One step like that, and it will cost everything.

I hope he has peace now.

And I hope society stops obsessing about what kind of pictures a person has on their hard drive as well as its delusions about children being absolutely beautiful, godlike, and perfect.  If society didn't place kids up on a pedestal to be worshiped like gods there wouldn't be so many ruined lives over what kinds of drawings or photos are found on one man's computer.

EDIT:

Of course, I'm oversimplifying things here.  Truth is, if society didn't have this to worry about they'd be obsessing over something else and other people's lives would be ruined.  I'm just sick to death of all these panics.  The Red Scare, the Satanic Panic, the Pedophile Panic... good Gawd, if I was a tenth as paranoid as this I'd be locked up in a mental institution.  But society does it and it's completely okay.  It's bullshit, is what it is.

It's such a shame that simply possessing some files can drive a man to do that. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
Zenobius

Pretty sure there will be folks of low moral fiber out there spouting: "The law's the law" because it's currently "not them" who were in Daedalus's position, washing their hands in innocense whilst their heads gloat with 'personal pride' because they couldn't get it from whacking their dicks off. (or maybe I'm taking this a little too personal than I probably should).

True, I will say- and agree that it's horrible and inexcuseable "IF" he was possessing the 'real-deal' (which we cannot know for sure but for which there's reasonable doubt given the severity of his own actions) that however does not in any way excuse the fact that the only way he saw out of his current predicament was suicide. Suicide over some stupid ass files on his harddrive.

Some people would call this "Justice" I sincerily would like to ask: "Justice for whom?".

My heart goes out to his friends and family, my sincerest condolances.

This journal I posted a year and a half ago portrays what some of those bigots are like;
https://inkbunny.net/journalview.php?id=219368

Also, this is the kind of a clown of a detective it would take to try to build a case around a cub porn drawing;

Wow! Your Journal fits exactly with how I imagine these types of bigots to act like. :3
They would indeed see one of those old christian paintings and then raise hell over it without thinking any further.

And weird as it may sound I'd actually love to watch how Fearless Fosdick would string such a case together.
I'm most certain he would want to interview one of the 'non-existent' victims and then conclude that the reason he couldn't find any of them was because they were all still being held in a basement somewhere. (or he'd argue that the reason the pictures couldn't speak back was because they were too shocked to speak out on the atrocities committed against them) =P

It depends on what the illegal thing he had on his machine though.  He may not have hurt someone directly, but he may have been supporting/encouraging/contributing to harming someone, which is usually why what he likely had (let's use our imaginations here) is illegal.  There is a fine line between fantasy and reality when it comes to the content on Inkbunny, and frankly some of the fantasy squiks me out (I try to avoid it and not judge), but once you cross that line there are consequences.  It sucks he wound up in a position where he felt suicide was the only way out, but I would have to imagine he was probably facing prison time and the circumstances he would have faced in prison would have been hellish.

Along with that there is the whole registry which pretty much makes it impossible to get a job. In short due to how the system is you lose no matter what since the majority of the country dont believe in rehabilitating people and punishing them for the majority of their life even when it comes to minor offenses (Like low valued shoplifting (something that cost less than 100 dollars) which is in fact a misdemeanor but you can still get a life crippling criminal record for it *and it happened before* )

Good gods...I didn't even know him or get the chance to...but I believe that these people no matter who they are should he held accountable for forcing this beautiful person to snuff himself out over conjecture...

that being said I hope to all the powers that be he is in a better place now..

and to one of the comments here I'm pretty sure in a previous journal he said something about just heading to iraq for his job? perhaps he was in the military in iraq when shit went down..I dunno but..anyway I have nothing more to say except this is a travesty and tragedy...
