I might now own a cat?

It's been a bit since I last made a journal, so I thought I'd talk about this cat I've been taking care of!

Back in May, I noticed an outdoor cat in a yard a few blocks from my house. I would stop and pet him, and he was friendly and would follow me just up to the yard's edge for more pats. Then I noticed one time that his mouth smelled VERY BAD, and it seemed that he had something wrong with his lip or teeth. I tried to contact the people in the house to tell them their cat was sick, but no one was home. After a month of trying to contact the people there, I finally talked to someone on their way in the house, and it turned out no one owned him, he was a stray. So, did what anyone would do and came back the next day with a pet carrier and captured the cat.

So since June, I've been learning all about how to suddenly have a cat in the house. I took him to the vet that day, and we got rid of his fleas, checked him for issues, and assessed that he has rotting teeth and needs at least 3 removed. I started contacting every shelter I could to see if I could get him adopted to a no-kill place while I took care of any medical things I could afford, and also frantically googled everything about cats, from "how much do you feed them each day" to "how to tell if a cat is happy".

Cut to today, where I finally was able to get an appointment and bring him in to a shelter I'd been in contact with, to see about adoption for him. Unfortunately, his temperament does not lend well to being held in a shelter, and he does not get along with other animals currently. The shelter does not have a feline foster program, and if they did, it would be a home with many cats, which would be an issue for him. He is a very sweet and loving cat in his own more subdued way, but it's not in a way that can jive well with what the shelter needs in a pet they can easily adopt out. There are too many other animals that are more likely to be adopted, and those have to be given priority, which makes sense even if it's sad. He also has his expensive dental issue, and recently has had issues with going poop in the litter box, which is a big nope for shelters, I learned. The people working with me were very kind, though. They gave me a list of options I could pursue, ways I could try solving his bathroom issue, and let me know about low-income pet pantry options and vet care. They even sent me off with two cases of food and some litter for him, even though they didn't have to and weren't getting paid or anything for this.

So for now, it's a little unclear exactly where Toby and I will go with him. I have a few more shelters I can try talking to, to see if they'll have anything different to say, but it's not optimistic on that front. I'm confident we can get his bathroom issue resolved though, and that will help a bit with that. I'll keep asking the few people I know locally to see if anyone is interested in adopting a cat, as well. Toby and I have talked more on it, and we could keep the cat and make it work, partly in thanks to the low cost advice the shelter gave. The biggest hurdle for us is his dental work, which is quite pricey. Luckily it's not something he needs done immediately, and even then, he's still living a better life now than he was outside (he is declawed in the front, and can't bite due to his bad teeth, so he was pretty unprotected).

And there you have it, the ballad of this cat, who I've named Jelly. He is a good sweet boy, and I really hope wherever he ends up in all this, he'll be super comfy and healthy.

Rescued cats are some of the most loving creatures I have ever been fortunate enough to be with~

I can guarantee that.  One of my beloved cats died last September and, while I was in mourning, I refused to consider getting another cat until I believed that I could handle having another one.  (I had the sister of the one that had died so I wasn't completely alone.)  A couple of months ago, my vet called me and told me that they had received a cat that needed a new home due to the fact that his previous owner had to be put into a nursing home.  I'm so glad I accepted that cat because he is the most loving cat I believe I've ever had.  He jumps into my lap, lays his head on my stomach or chest and purrs like a diesel engine.  I thank God for sending him to me.

He is certainly a sweet little guy, even if he's a grumpy old man cat X3 I like him quite a lot.

You made a mistake in the title.  You do not own a cat.  The cat owns you.

I was going to say the exact same thing.

Was going to say this, myself. Couldn't be more accurate.

Having a cat around is super Fun, I would suggest to keep him if you can since he's already more comfortable with you guys and it's sadly pretty uncommon for people to go adopt an adult animal, but they do light up the mood of a house.

Having a cat is a financial burden as I mentioned, but I'd sooner try to make it work than put him back on the street. We'll do our best *thumbs up*

Ohh mala id say keep him and hold a *help jelly visit the kitty dentists drive* and do for it like Chibis or something sounds to me like jelly loves his home with you
Malachyte

Yeah, I think having a funding drive is the only way I can manage the dental expenses. Once I get a quote from this low-income vet, I'll be able to see about setting that up with a clear goal. Right now I know it'll be $800 at the regular vet (which is actually lower than normal, too.)

That's a good thing you did. He's in a better situation now than he was before, so much kudos for that! <3

And declawing a cat?! I've never heard of such a cruel thing, was he abused or something?
KolewazakiSan

The declawing is a procedure they do at the vet's. Some people can't handle their cats and solve the "scratching problem" by removing the claws of their pets. It's cruel and unnecessary - just get the cat at least one scratching pole and some decent toys, maybe clip the nails sometimes.

It's pretty lucky this cat managed to survive on the streets without half the claws and bad teeth. I'm guessing it's a rather peaceful place where he was. Kind of a lucky cat, given the situation.

That's awful! Turns out the reason I'd not heard about it is because it's illegal to do here in the UK. Why anyone would get a cat and then cut parts of them off to make it "convenient" is beyond me. Hopefully it's not too common over there, and perhaps those people should be encouraged to get a less destructive pet, like a tortoise instead! xD

Happy to hear it's banned there.
I don't know, some people are just terribly ignorant and don't realise what a responsibility is to have a pet, and don't think they have to educate themselves on how to take care of the animal :/ Food, water and that's it (facepalm)

Tortoises are awesome, btw, I'm thinking of getting a couple in the future, if I have the space for a proper habitat :D

Same thing I say for having them "fixed" in my opinion.
MviluUatusun
6 years, 8 months ago
Well, having an animal "fixed" isn't such a bad thing, especially since so many pet owners aren't responsible owners.  Also, it's been proven that a spayed or neutered pet lives longer and is less destructive than a complete one is, especially if the spaying or neutering is done before the animal is sexually mature.  Every cat I've ever owned was spayed or neutered and I never had any problems with them.  All that said, I won't be like a lot of people and berate you for your feelings on the subject I just hope you'll reconsider it and think about all the unwanted kittens and puppies that wind up being either roadkill or put down in a shelter because nobody wants to give them a home.

You know full well he is going to end up staying with you. :) You might as well embrace that fact now!

How expensive are we talking for his teeth?
Malachyte

Right now I know it'll be $800 at the regular vet (which is actually lower than normal). I need to make an appointment with this low-income vet place I learned about from the shelter, and get a quote from them to see exactly what I'm dealing with there.

Are there any animal charities in the area, like the RSPCA we have here, that might be able to help, considering it's a stray cat you're helping?
Malachyte
6 years, 8 months ago
There are, and I've contacted every one I've found in the area and left multiple messages, but no luck getting in touch with an actual person. I imagine they get a lot of calls, so it's not surprising it would be difficult to hear back.

Or so you think. Usually they own you :> Can we see some pictures of the cute fluff that got very lucky with his new owners?

Aw, this is so sweet, and it's really awesome of you to go to all that trouble to help the kitty out. Too many people would have just ignored him. Whether you decide to adopt him yourself, or try to get him into another shelter, or find a third option, it's heartening to know that you're doing so much to see to it that he's well cared for and loved wherever he might end up. Cats really are wonderful little animals, too. I've had cats all of my life and every one has been amazing in his or her own way.

Thank you. He really is just a total sweet heart, and it's awful to think that all he needed was a place to continue living, to be healthy. He was definitely someone's cat before, since he's declawed and litter trained and all that. Wherever he ends up in this, I won't settle for anything less than a totally loving home for a this little guy.

LemmyNiscuit
6 years, 8 months ago
Aww, that's sweet. I have my own wild cat that adopted me. Fortunately for him, it's not too big a deal to take care of him for me, as it's not my first time adopting a wild cat.

It's good that he's a nice cat. The ones you find on the street tend to be the best. It's that relationship they form with you, as you were probably the only one who even stopped to acknowledge him, let alone pet him. Thank you for doing this; it's tough, I can empathize, but there's a fulfilment you get from taking care of an unfortunate creature that doesn't compare to anything else.

Good luck with him, and if you need any small advice feel free to send a PM. Give him a few ear-squeezes for us.

Thank you! I noticed him in a yard and stopped to pet him now and again, and he would always meow excitedly and follow me around for more pets, ha ha. He's not a cuddler, but he looooves pets. I'm still pretty new to owning a cat, but with the magic of google and panicked calls to the vet, I'm learning the ropes okay X3

I'm kind of curious why you named him Jelly? That sounds like an interesting little story in itself.
Malachyte
6 years, 8 months ago
The day I brought him home, I had to take him to the vet, and he needed a name for the paperwork. I didn't want to name him something that doesn't suit him, so I thought about the only thing I really knew about him; that he has gross spit that's jelly-like in consistency.

Cute, I know.

Anyone who has ever lived with a cat knows. The cat owns you, or thinks it does.

They are adorable about it, but when they want something they will find a way to manipulate you in subtle and adorably effective ways. XD

where i live there is a lot of stray cats that the church feeds so almost every night you can see a cat outside
curtainshowers
6 years, 8 months ago
Thank you for doing all that for him! There really aren't enough people like you taking care of wayward animals. Unfortunately, the fact that he's declawed points to an owner dump. It's also pretty common for people to move out and just leave their cat to fend for themselves, especially for the sort of uncaring asshole that declaws their cat and leaves it defenseless outside.
Malachyte
6 years, 8 months ago
Yeah, we're guessing he was left behind by owners who moved away. He wouldn't leave the yard he was in very far, and is approximately 10 years old. The people living in the house currently just seemed to be leaving food for him, but confirmed that no one there owns him. I live in a pretty bad neighborhood, so there are a lot of stray and mistreated animals here, unfortunately.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad he has someone to help him, though ^^
