Sonic Boom Review for 08/05/2017

Well... this episode of Sonic Boom... *sighs* Okay, I'm not gonna sugarcoat this. I did not like this episode. Maybe it was the cheesy music or the predictable plot or the fact that the Cyborg characters from the epic 4-parter returned... for an absolutely ridiculous reason.

*sighs* Let's get this over with... Here's my review on the episode of Sonic Boom, which aired on August 5th, 2017.

"Victory!"

The episode starts with cheesy music playing as Sonic and friends play soccer at a rec center while several other characters (including Og on a hoverboard) play their games. As the gang pulls off moves that will most likely be seen on the next Mario & Sonic Summer Olympics game ( XD ), Mayor Fink put a condemned notice on the Rec Center's door, saying the funding was pulled because the city needs another houseboat. (Ugh...) Soon, at Meh Burger, Amy suggested to her friends to print out petitions for the villagers to sign in order to save the rec center. They soon do just that and manages to get the signatures needed. However, when they presented the petition to Mayor Fink... he immediately puts it in the shredder, saying he needed it for confetti for the budget parade. (Oh, for fuck's sake...) After a bit of fourth wall breaking, Eggman shows up demanding to buy the rec center, just so he can tear it down and build a private rec center for himself. (Oy, the convolutedness... it's making my head hurt.) Mayor Fink then says that control of the rec center can only change hands in an athletic competition. (Did they get this from an 80's movie?) Sonic then challenges Eggman to a game of soccer... until he disses him, saying he doesn't have a team. Eggman accepts anyway, confident his team will win... Problem is, his robots are completely useless at playing soccer. Orbot then says that it seems that the only team that could beat Sonic and friends are... Sonic and friends. Eggman wondered where he could find duplicates of Sonic and crew. And now we head back to Morris-- uh, sorry, Roboken, as Eggman uses a rocket to get there, in the hopes of using Team Cybonic for his (stupid) plan. Eggman didn't have to wait long as the cybernetic team as they started firing their lasers at him. When confronted, Eggman claims he comes to make a peace offering, saying he just wants 30 minutes of their time and he'll give them fitness counting wristbands. Cyborg Knuckles, just as dim as the regular Knux, is eager about these useless devices (Thank you, Adam Ruins Everything. :) ). Soon, Eggman made his intentions clear: "I want you guys to beat Sonic's team in a soccer game. Please do this for me." Not surprising enough, the cyborg team declined. Eggman gives the Fitbit knockoffs to them anyway. As soon as they put them on however, their robotic program was rewritten to follow Eggman's commands. (Jeez... you'd think Cyborg Sticks would have seen that coming, since she pointed this out at the end of "Robots From the Sky"... ) Back at the rec center, Team Sonic were seen practicing their soccer game. Then Team Cybonic arrived. Sonic was confused by the robotic duplicates' change in attitude until Eggman revealed he put them under mind control. Before Team Sonic could start a fight with Eggman though, Eggman says he'll release the cybernetic team from his control after the soccer game. (Really?) So, they decided to play a practice exhibition round. Since, it was pretty much a mirror match, it was pretty much a stalemate, that is, until Eggman decides to reprogram Team Cybonic's behavior to that of the most unpleasant, mean-spirited, brutish, aggressive group ever known: high-school jocks. (*Massive facepalm*) Soon after, he infects them with the firmware the cyborg team started playing more aggressively... and making cheesy comments. (Oh, god, this is ripped from a cheesy 80's movie...) The next day, at Meh Burger, Sonic & Tails tries to get something to eat, only to get cut off by Cyborg Sonic & Cyborg Knux. As the two of them started to rough house on the counter, Sonic threatened to drag them off, only for Tails to tell him they can't fight them because they're still their friends and that they're just mind controlled into being jerks. The day of the big soccer game arrived. The first half showed the cyborg team dominating with an early lead. Team Sonic had to come up with a plan and quick. As Tails was saying that they had to see where the duplicates' weaknesses and their strengths overlap, he was soon struck by belts by the robotic team. When Amy sarcastically commented on how original that was (like me when it came to this plot of the episode), Tails realized that thanks to that virus, they're too dumb to be creative (Ah... no, too easy. I've been beating this episode up enough...) and they needed to be more unpredictable. As the second half started, Team Sonic played some music and started doing... a synchronized dance number? (Well... that was unpredictable, I'll give them that...) Confused by this, the Cyborg team stood no chance as Team Sonic soon played circles around them, almost to the rhythm of the song being played. (Okay, that part was pretty cool. And the song sounded... familiar... *Looks over at Sonic 3.* XD ) Afterwards Team Sonic won the game. Mayor Fink soon announced that the rec center will stay open... and he'll close down the library instead. (Okay, that was pretty funny, too. Especially Amy's reaction when everyone else cheered. :D ) To no surprise, Eggman wouldn't hold up his end of the deal and had Team Cybonic attack Team Sonic. Once again, it was a stalemate, until Tails notices the Fitbit knockoffs the duplicates were wearing. he immediately tells the others to destroy those wristbands. They do so and Team Cybonic were free from Eggman's control. Both teams then start kicking around Eggman, in his Egg Mobile, like a soccer ball, in a style almost similar to the ending of the Season 1 finale episode, "It Takes A Village To Defeat A Hedgehog."

Well, there were a few good parts in this thing, but a lot of the plot, face palming, and ridiculousness kind of ruined it for me. I mean, all this for a rec center. It works for an 80's flick, but... to me, not so much with this series. If Eggman wanted to tear down the place and put up something detrimental to an evil plan, that I could understand. Maybe it's also the "jock attitude" which kind of brings up unfortunate past memories in my school life, which is why I didn't dig this episode too much, either. And the fact that the Cyborg team were utilized very... poorly here. Maybe I overestimated this, considering they were introduced during that epic 4-parter... The messed up thing is I really wanted to like this. It had Sonic and friends involved in a sporting event. But, alas, it was the bowling episode all over again, but with less Beatles references and a lot less Sonic going mental moments.

Well, I hear the next episode will feature Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails, & Knux) as babysitters. That should be a fun episode to watch... and maybe give me more comic ideas. :)

I don't watch Sonic Boom very often. Unless, if the SatAM/Archie characters shows up.

the 80's cliches are strong in this one.  I got really incredulous about how easily Eggman was able to reprogram team Cybonic's organic brains, since the fact that they couldn't be hacked by Tails' mind control robot was their whole shtick.  I also didn't like the mayor joining the 4th wall breaking club, it's like everyone is trying to be Deadpool all of a sudden.

It was better when Sticks was the only one doing it...
