So, long story short, I got thoroughly disgusted with the whole peon retail lackey thing, and finally let my neighbor talk me into signing onto his security agency. (Not actually his, but he's fairly high in the heirarchy)
Last night was my training day, and even though twelve hour overnight shifts may get a bit long, I woke up this morning (afternoon) feeling more relaxed than I have in years, and even though I didn't do anything physical, I still felt actually...relevant? and accomplished.
So I'm thinking the plan is going to be to spend much of the time during the night that I'm not checking vehicles in and out actually learning to draw. Also, I decided I needed to tweet my decision to change jobs before my first shift and this happened. (Warning, RL SFW pic!)
Not sure how I managed to look so adult and responsible, but there's the evidence!
So hopefully I'll still be enjoying my new job on the 30th when I crawl one step closer to that half century mark!
Congratulations on the career change. It sounds like just what was needed, and I hope this new job will treat you well! Learning to draw sounds like an awesome goal as well, and I hope that will go really well for you, too!

Ooh, neat. Congrats on getting the new job, and I'd say that's definitely a step up! I've always had a fair bit of respect for security folks, since that's not a job I think I could do, and I hope it all goes really well for ya. Best of luck on learning to draw, too. I'm sure you'll do great!

Yeah, physical security isn't for everybody. I had a lot of experience in the Army, so I at least know a little bit what to expect. The crux of the job is really access control, and most people realize the need for everything I need to confirm and write down, so there shouldn't be any big surprises :)
Thank you, on both accounts! Yeah, physical security isn't for everybody. I had a lot of experienc
Congratulations. I'm sure that beats pecking keys on a register all day long, and dealing with occasional irrate customers who the boss sez, "The customer is always right".
Since the TV series Married With Childern aired, that "retail lackey" thing has always reminded me of Al Bundy the shoe salesman; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRCHBi0DRFg

I always thought that job would be a rat hole. In a hurry to deliver the pizza before it gets cold. Having trouble finding a customer's house. Hoping they don't send you to Tim-Buck-Tu burning two tanks of gas making a delivery.

It was fun for a while, but the company I worked for fell apart under a clueless owner who put her sons in charge, one of which shouldn't even be in the store, much less in a capacity where he can believe to be "in charge" of anything.
I went to a different company, and they're the stereotypical "Maximum effort for minimum pay" company that has a $2.00/delivery delivery area, but only pays the driver $1.00 of the $2.00 delivery fee they collect. Plus, they apparently have a habit of skimming paychecks. So...yeah.
