Unless you've been living under a rock recently, you've probably heard that the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic series is no more, and I'd like to share my thoughts on this event, and on the comic itself.

The first time I saw an Archie Sonic comic was in the Extras section of the Sonic Mega Collection Plus on the PS2. The gallery contained the first of the comics in its entirety, and all of the covers of the subsequent comics up to issue #139.

I thought they looked fascinating, with characters I'd never even heard of before (I never watched SatAM growing up, mind you), and so I took to the internet to find out more about them.

I immediately got stuck in with finding and reading the entire library of the comics, and I fucking loved them!

I loved the action, the fact that very few of the female characters didn't kick ass at one point or another, the lovely artwork and the fact that it gave me a crush on Mina Mongoose.

And then issue #243 came around, where former writer Ken Penders took his ball (and his characters) and went home, thereby wiping his bum on a 20-year comic with little to no regards as to its future.

Now, I can't really say much about Penders that the whole internet hasn't screamed at him through Twitter, but I would say this:

Good luck with the Lara-Su Chronicles. Judging by the state of your art and the continual savaging you're getting by Sonic fans everywhere, you'll need it.

Anyway, that meant that a significant portion of my favourite characters vanished, which tarnished my enjoyment of the comic somewhat. As did the Worlds Collide crossover. And the Worlds Unite Crossover. To be honest, even the inclusion of the awesome Honey the Cat, the Sonic the Fighters storyline or even the Sonic Unleashed storyline couldn't help my slowly mounting feelings of disinterest with the comic I had once revered.

When issue #291 failed to arrive on time, many people (including myself) knew that something was up. Rumours circulated on Tumblr and Twitter: is this the end of Archie Sonic?

And now, half a year later, it's true.

So thank you, Archie Sonic.Thank you for the memories, thank you for the adventures, the people, the places, the up, the downs and the in-betweens.

At least the Sonic comic isn't COMPLETELY over and done with.  SEGA of America 'still has plans' for a Sonic comic, and 'wants to take the series in a different direction'.  I sincerely hope that that doesn't mean it'll only be game tie-ins/reinterpretations, that would be boring as fuck and get old real fast, it'd be like a comic version of the first two rehash arcs of Dragon Ball Super.  On a more positive note, SEGA still owns the SatAM characters, so there's always the chance that they could show up once again in any future comic.

And speaking of the future comic, I REALLY hope the job is given to IDW, as a crossover with TMNT could be pretty neat.  If not, Image comics or Dark Horse could probably do well by the series too.
