George Romero (1940-2017)

Romero was a horror legend. What he did for the zombie genre alone makes him a keystone in horror movie history. He is the reason there is even a zombie genre to begin with.

I will be the first to say that his last films were shit. I have even shown them on my Bad Movie Friday showing. However, the original Dead films are among my all time favorite horror movies ever. Night of the Living Dead brought us our first true, ghoulish, man eating zombies in a depiction that has been near impossible to surpass. All zombie films have to be compared to this film. Dawn of the Dead is my favorite for the simplistic genius it gives in having people hide in a secured mall and gives some great social commentary. And then Day of the Dead, which started to evolve the zombies, even making one a named character(Bub), and allowed Tom Savini to give us possibly the goriest effects of his career. Any movie that gives more graphic gore starts to lean towards being comedic. Or its animated.

There is more I can say and talk about.Like his friendship with Mister Rogers(yes, THAT Mister Rogers), about his other works. Or about how remakes of his films seem to actually work. One of Zack Snyder's best films just happens to be a remake of Dawn of the Dead. Or how his films have inspired future directors and movie greats, like Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg making Shaun of the Dead.

Fare well, Mister Romero, and may you not rise like in your films.

Gotta admit though, if he did rise, it would be poetic for the greatest horror director to become the first ever true zombie...

"When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the earth."

Words which upon first hearing, I would never outgrow, or forget. A single phrase that would forever cement his role in the genre of horror. A legend lost, but always revered.

Thankful for his contributions and craft.
