Artistic style

When I was little, I just assumed that Walt Disney did all his own artwork.
And, by extension, the same for Bugs Bunny, Popeye and every other cartoon character.

Uh, no. Turns out they all had a large staff of artists that copied the original style.

I don't want to admit to how old I was before I figured that out.

I actually learned about the animation industry from this as a lad:

But that in itself does address the staff of animators exactly.
I grew up seeing the art of R. Crumb.
In all of the underground comix, he did all his own artwork.
That was just "how it was done."
Then in 1972, the movie Fritz the Cat was released.
R. Crumb had nothing to do with it, except for creating the characters.
Looking at the crew credits, there's a LOT of animation artists.
R. Crumb is not listed.

An I realized, "Holy shit, there's a bunch of people that learned how to draw just like R. Crumb!"

Yeah, pretty much.  It is a bit of a revelation...  :D

Another one I remember is the studio tour in "The Reluctant Dragon".  Here's the bit where they mix the colors:

Art is like Classical and Jazz - everyone builds on the greats of the day.

When I was little I didn't realize cartoons were drawn at all. I thought those were real creatures who lived in America.

Similarly, I always assumed that comics were drawn and written by the same people. Seems that at least in the furry community that most comics are artist/writer collaborations.
Next week's topic: Many furry artists aren't furries; they just do furry art.

Segar did the work except when he was terminally ill. He did a few strips after emerging from the hospital - to die at home.

Walt Kelly did use assistants and they continued the strip, after his passing, until hospital & burial expemses were paid off by royalties. THEN widow Kelly quietly laid the strip to rest...
