I'm screaming!!!!

by
So I woke up feeling a bit off today, kinda of out of sorts and tired.
I finished 2/4 of the commissions I accepted yesterday, they were coming out alright despite how I was feeling....
But then I worked on my third one, everything was going pretty good, I was giving it its finishing touches, and my power flickered!!
guys I didnt save AT ALL.
I normally save quite often because I procrastinate so bad, but this one I was focused, no browsing the internet, so playing phone games. So I didnt even think to save!!
I just stared at my computer for a little while, I honestly wanted to break it
Also contemplated just refunding the last two and just being done for today...but felt like that wouldn't be fair

I'm so upset, but starting to come off it.

Worst feeling in the world, when that happens. Just want to give up on everything and turn into a hermit for a while.

One of the reasons I keep all of my pistols locked up.  By the time I get one out of the safe I've calmed down enough so I only threaten to shoot it.

I dont own any guns, but that sounds like a good reason to keep them locked up

lmao I just imagine you just rubbing the barrel of your gun against the computer saying "I see what you did.... you wanna shut off on me again? huh? common... I dare you... show me how much of a computer you really are..." or something to that end XD

Pretty close.  After taking it out of my gun safe I slowly load it and place it next to the computer.  Then tell it to work or else.

Yeah, that happened to me a while back. Put me off that whole day... Sorry for your loss, but with these kinds of things, if you have time to work on something else first and then come back to the stuff you lost the second attempt is even better. Or at least for a writer anyway; I can only assume it's the same for most artistic pursuits...

These things can put me off for a few days if I let it, but I cant afford to do that ;;v;/!!
Also I was so upset I dont think I could work on the idea, or the same character for at least a week, just looking at them makes me wanna cry lol
I ended up asking them for a different character to draw.

ouch I'm sorry that happened to you. I had a similar problem. I thought i saved a pic as usual cause I had to resize a character for a friend, and when I went back to finish it up the computer acted like it couldn't find it at all. all that hard work and it just poofed.

But now it will be even better now that you got the practice version out of the way!

But yeah, been there too, windows update ftw -.-

You should invest in a device that stores a little bit of energy and when the power happens to shut down it keeps your pc going for like ten minutes. We have few  at our agency where I work and they saved us multiple times. Sadly I forgot how they are called but you shouldnt have problems finding them on the web. :>

A ups is pretty handy, mine gives me a half hour and then shuts things down on my computer before cutting power.

Aww jeez.... with how frustrated I get with power flickers interrupting a game, I almost literally can't imagine how furious you must be ;n;

Save Early Save Often! And use Dropbox so if your power cuts off mid-save you can recover your file =p

That's pretty much why I got in the habit of hitting CTRL+S every few minutes while working on something. o.o;

I once deleted every piece of art I had on my computer. I don't have old files to any art I did before 2013 now, but I remember being so devastated. Thank god for external hard drives now.

I understand your pain.

I've been working on my variation of the game Dread. Been working on it for months, truth be told, but this last week I buckled in and just....created. Non-stop, every day, for a week. Eight pages of dialogue written, 4 complicated puzzles, and ten pages of story.

Then my computer decided it was going to install all of it's updates for the first time in six months.

Everything is gone. Nothing saved. Nothing auto-saved. It's just...gone.

I put everything down and I haven't touched it in a week cuz I don't have the heart right now. I'll pick it up again but sometimes... you just gotta give yourself a second to breath, center yourself, and go out and throat-punch life a few fucking times.

So, my sympathies go out to you and I'm really sorry that it happened. It sucks immensely. Is there anything that I can do to help?

time to turn on auto save. also buy a battery backup. It has outlets on it for devices but a battery inside of it.

It would probably be a good idea to find out how to auto save your work in the program you like to use, you may be able to do it with scripting too, like if hitting a button saves your work you might be able to have someone script it to be pressed regularly.

This is why I advocate ALL artists (visual, written, musical, etc) to get a U.P.S. (Uninterruptible Power Supply aka a backup battery) device for their computer in addition to an external HD or two. Having a U.P.S. device will save your PC from sustaining damage from a cold shut and improper shut down, and one or two external HDs to back up all data in the event your primary HD fails or you get hit ransomware that encrypts your data.

Terrible... Happened to me once. Fortunately, the software I use has a recovery feature. If the program closes abruptly, it tries to recover the temp files. Maybe see if that's a feature you can enable in what you use.

I'm pretty sure Photoshop has an auto-save interval you can set...

if you were using paint tool sai check for any sai files in the root of your documents folder. In my experience the program crashing can put a save in there. I think it has to be a "proper" crash though, a power flicker probably doesn't count, but checking anyway is good. My sai is an older version though, so who knows.
