Tips On Cheeks?

Looking for any tidbits of advice revolving around making cute, chubby cheeks on a small, relatively thin character. I'm looking for something along the lines of Coco's new model from the N. Sane Trilogy. I'm only asking because simply studying the model (what little we actually have to actually work off of), is not helping much. I've made faces that point-for-point mimicked Coco, and others that came off as creepy and spacious, because of poor perspective, poor cheek placement, and poor sizing.
Any advice on the matter would be supremely helpful. Thank you.

Don't look to change the shape of the cheeks on the outside, just make sure to draw curved lines that go up into the bottom of the eyes. Gives the illusion of chubby cheeks.

I believe I get what you're saying, but I generally use that to emphasise a certain emotion or expression, like a big grin. My goal here is to make the outer cheeks and chin somewhat more noticeable in this particular character.
