OH MY GOD IT'S A FUCKING MIRACLE! THEY DID IT! THEY FINALLY MADE A DCEU MOVIE THAT DOESN'T SUCK!
*Ahem*
I apologize for that outburst. But seriously, Director Patty Jenkins managed a Hail Mary pass here and made a Wonder Woman movie that was true to the character's roots and personality, simultaneously grounding her into the dark, morally grey realism of World War One while still making her noble and idealistic, allowing her Heroism to shine through.
None of this "Dark, Grey Deconstruction" Bullcrap we got from Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. No Sir, Wonder Woman starts out wanting to defeat evil and stop the war to save innocent lives, and she ends up defeating evil and stopping the war to save innocent lives. How she gets there is the interesting story.
Is the movie flawless? Nnnnno. I'll admit it has its flaws. Once you see what Ares really looks like under the armor, it's hard to take him seriously. They really should've made him shapeshift a bit to take on a more intimidating appearance by the final confrontation. It's a classic Olympian power, after all. And you could play up the "Puppetmaster" angle by revealing he was secretly a few different people we'd seen previously, manipulating things from behind the scenes. But I guess the message was that there's nothing actually "cool" about War, in the end.
And I'm sad to say I think this movie raised the bar too high for Justice League. Unless another miracle happens, there's no way they can match up to Wonder Woman's standard now.
