This is probably the most I've posted in forever but just as I was making hot dogs, a theory came to me about Sonic Forces. So here we go.
Okay, so today it was announced that there will be a new villain in Sonic Forces and with him/her, as sidekicks are Metal Sonic, Shadow, Chaos 0, and that one Zeti character from lost world. Everyone's been questioning why they are there, most notably the Zeti and Chaos 0. And in the gameplay, we see a cameo of Silver as a CPU. Why is he there in the first place if his future is fixed?? And why is Classic Sonic returning?? Welp ladies and gentlemen, I have a theory.
I speculate that the new villain has some sort of beef with our hero, Sonic. I think that the villain has been watching Sonic save the world since the very beginning, and has kept a close eye on the things he's defeated. For example, the new villain has recruited the villains that Sonic has encountered in the past. Metal Sonic, Shadow, Chaos 0, and the Zeti. He/She's only using the villains that are still around. Biolizard, Solaris, and Dark Gaia don't appear as they have been defeated/killed off. Since each of these previous villains know how to defeat Sonic, this gives the new villain a new advantage to defeat Sonic.
The case for Silver being here is actually quite simple, as it is somehow canon on Sonic, Shadow, and Silver remembering the events of Soleana, I think this has something to do with time travel. There are two endings, one where Sonic and the gang are defeated and the world stays in an apocalypse and the other being that the world goes back to normal. This explains why Silver is here unless he is living with Blaze in the present.
For the case of Classic Sonic, I'm not actually sure why he is here. I speculate that Classic Sonic might have been transported to the present by a time warp, like those from Sonic CD or from a strong entity like Tikal or just the emeralds themselves to help aid our hero.
Those glowing squares the new villain has might be like one of those magic balls that tell a certain event in the past, in this case, Sonic's past adventures. I think those are what the new villain is using to help him create such Chaos. Not only are they telling an event, but I think they use the power or strength of the event to be used as weapons against the others, explaining why the new villain shoots them out at the end of the trailer.
I also think he has set Shadow a bargain with him to get him on his side, probably a chance to see Maria again or something that Shadow can't refrain from taking the offer, explaining why he is on the dark side once again.
So that's my theory of Sonic Forces and hopefully, this kinda explains why some things are what they are.
