Action has always been my thing. I hate turn-based things so it would be a whole new angle for me. I was thinking maybe an RPG with a BBH style combat system. Something like D&D but more basic.
you'll find you have more freedom with the sprite layers when it's pre-rendered. i think you'll flourish in that respect. there's enough tutorials to make an engine easy but you really have to think creatively to make an adventure game, don't just work backwards from an MMO RPG. DSEGs are story based so don't just make it like a bunch of quests, there needs to be character development. the fewer the characters and the more they contrast the better. basically just don't do the typical stickman thing.
