Ever draw something that made you cry?

I'm working on a thing right now. Well, trying... The first part was easy enough to sketch out. But the second part is causing me to choke up... It isn't supposed to be super depressing. But running the story through my head is making this hard. :/

Not drawings. But I've wrote some sad parts of stories that choked me up a little..

Same thing. When your own creativity brings you down. Great inspiration, but damn hard to push through sometimes...

I'm not artist or writer, but musician, and I've written pieces that brought me super down, partially because of the story they were based on...

and I definitely know comics in this community that stir my emotions like few things can, and I wonder about the artists, what effect it has on them, if it's cathartic, or overpowering, or who knows what.

Music is still art, man. Don't sell yourself short.

There's plenty of songs out there that mean a lot more to me than any drawing.

I'm not discounting music at all, just contrasting it with visual art is all I meant.

I've written stories and created scenes for pen-and-paper games (D&D, World of Darkness, etc.) that left me feeling like scum when the time came to share them. It's kind of hard to build up a relationship between the readers and a beloved character, only to kill off the character (usually quite gruesomely) later on like it was all some sort of sick prank.

Even the "noble sacrifice" trope can be difficult because it's like cutting out all this amazing potential for growth and development while telling an old friend to never speak to you again. I've found that this means the character/setting/story has a lot of meaning and impact for everyone else, and that it's going to be enjoyed for exactly that reason.

Whenever I get cold feet about doing something depressing, I take a moment to think of all the other instances I've come across where similar themes occur, draw strength from their success, and push myself to attempt replicating that emotion with my own works. I consider it an homage to all the moments that tugged my own heartstrings and that's what gets me through to the end: wanting to do justice to the "original" and accurately portraying the pain and heartache that inspired the scene.

Also, if the matter is something quite personal and is making it hard to push through, just remember that the best works are created through experience and often nobody will know the difference unless they've met you personally. It can be quite therapeutic to let out any negativity this way.

Push on. I'm sure you'll do great. :)

The "noble sacrifice" gets me a lot... Fucking Iron Giant, man. EVERY time I hear him say, "Superman" I choke up.

Christ, I'm doing it now...

"I am NOT a gun." The feels, man.

Also...

Armageddon.

Goddamn Bruce Willis with that song in the background.

Steven Tyler didn't want to perform that song until they played it for him over that scene. Afterward, he was in tears and said "Okay, okay. I'll do it." Knowing that it's a song from a father to his daughter just made that punch in the gut so much harder.
