Just because someone if good/ skilled with something

by
Doesnt mean they wanna do it for you!!

*sigh*
This is more so meant towards family and friends, not anyone here.
Can you tell I'm being asked to draw things I don't wanna draw. And this time I'm styles I don't even draw in!!
And what is it with people thinking you can draw in any and every style just because you draw?

I get the same thing with PCs.
People who know nothing of how they work think i am some kind of wizard from the future.

"But you're so good with computers!"

Holy crap, yes! And it's even worse when it extends to work! They find out I have the slightest inkling of artistic talent and suddenly my position extends to include creating promotional artwork for our website and fliers!

But at least I got a raise...

Oh, wait. I DIDN'T!

Wow that's terrible!!
I would think there would be something legally you can do about that. But then again, you also gotta pay the bills 😫

At least it isn't my primary job. Only recently did I FINALLY convince them to get an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription so I wouldn't have to use my personal account.

On the plus side, I get to experiment and learn things with Premiere and After Affects that I probably wouldn't have sat down to do at home. *shrug*

Happened to me years ago, it's why I don't take my sketch book to work anymore back in the days

I totally understand what you mean... My family/older friends always did this (they know better now because I made them realize it's not ok). Its really silly, they gotta learn to understand that you're not obligated to draw for them, or draw in styles you're not interested in! <3

i do get you, when i started commissions , the first things i got were already weird fetishes of people and ask me to draw things and i went like ''you come to my gallery, you see my art, do you think i ever want to draw that''
Clara

I've gotten this a couple times luckily not very often, since most people here understand the process.
I've had some people trying to get me to alter my style with each wip I gave them, and I'm thinking "Sounds to me like you want art from this other artist ....."

God story of my life with my family.  My parents always tried to force me to draw things for my brother "because he's family"  of course I never bought into that shit.  It was very clear he was just trying to use me and cried to my parents when I wouldn't let him.

And no, I don't mean  as children. I mean as young adults. At this time I was already taking commissions and proved my art was worth compensation.

I was told that "family" bullshit too.
Like I'm ok with doing stuff for my family, but not to the point were I'm stressed out ,and starting to feel resentment.

But a Christian cake maker can be forced to serve a gay couple when it goes against their religion. Yep, I went there. Where do we go from here?
AvaBun

Bible scholars are still debating over that, actually... And, since there's a ton of gay Christians, just saying, "It's against my religion" doesn't mean that it actually is definitively.

Anywho, any talk of religion is too complex and nowhere near as definitive or reasonable as this issue. There's nowhere to go, so it's best to leave that alone.

This more on a family/friend level not a professional one.
As for my opinion on the matter I feel it's total bullshit. If that were the case she'd have to stop making cakes for about 90% of her heathen clientele if I'm understanding this correctly.
But I'm not a very religious person myself. So I'm like whatever is whatever man.
Feels odd even talking about this issue though, given the content I'm making, like what the fuck does my opinion matter lol...ive gotten off track....

I've heard horror stories of bad commissioners asking for fetishes people don't wanna do or just being in general rude people. It makes me anxious when I think about getting good enough to draw for money >.<

Omg this is exactly how things go with me..
I spend 40 hours a week helping people fix their internet connections and my family seem to think that on the 2 days off I get each week the first thing I want to do is help solve the problems their PC / electronic device is having..

x.x

I know the feeling all too well

you have the right to refuse service if the subject matter is outside your preferances as per the artist/commisioners agreement

Uhhhghhhhh. I get this all the time, even growing up it's annoying. You're minding your own business doodling at your desk and someone comes up to you all "Can you draw me??? :DDDD" ...no.

I'm the kind of commissioner that checks an artist's style before I decide whether or not to commission that artist.  I prefer my characters to look as realistic as possible.  (For example, https://inkbunny.net/submissionview.php?id=1219152)  I looked for a long time before I found the artist that drew the picture I used as an example.  While I like looking at cartoony types, I like my characters to look believable, if you know what I mean.

I can very happily look my friends/family dead in the eyes and say 'pay me' with a cheerful grin. That gets them to shut up fast usually. I don't work for free for anyone. Not unless its my choice and a gift I want to do.

People who don't know better underestimate how difficult art can be. They believe that in art, natural talent is everything, that its either you have it or you don't. They believe that you are born with a gift, rather than that you are born with a passion that has given rise to skill. This passion is what allows you to take whats in your imagination, and place it into the real world in a fashion that is above the capabilities of those without that passion.

While it may be flattering that they believe you to be good enough to pump art out willy nilly, art is not that easy if your not actually at that level.

I think a big part of it comes from art education. When someone looks at an artist who does character illustration, for example, people might say "Oh, you should go work for Disney!" (I've gotten that one before.) A typical portfolio for someone looking for that kind of career would have tons of different "styles" that they're expected to be able to draw in.

People also seem to mistake practice for talent and seem to think that someone talented in art is talented in every single aspect of art.
