Opinions: Best way to bid on auctions?

So from my perspective there hasn't really been a right or wrong way to really go about a fair way as everything ive seen done has pro's and cons, so I tend to switch up the rules. Way i see it is

Autobuys
Pros:
- Can offer realistic price
- Less stress from being paid more than my regular commissions go for
- No risk of an Autobuyer trying to add 'false' bids to make the bids increase unfairly

Cons:
- Bidders can snatch up an AB at anytime if they have the money for it which sort of shuts out previous bidders
- Stress from thinking an autobuy price is set too high

No Limit Auctions
Pros:
- Potentially more money earned if the pic is popular enough
- Can make the picture better by adding more details and extras if the price gets high

Cons:
- High risk of 'false' bidders aiming to just up the price
- Many people shut out due to not having as much money to throw at art as higher bidders
- Feel pressured if the bids get higher than regular commission prices

Raffles
Pros:
- Can set a single price or several detail levels with prices that the winner can choose
- Everyone gets the same fair chance at the pic
- Less stress all around

Cons:
- Higher chance of people that join and quit when they win saying "I didnt expect to win really lol" (This has happened quite a few times honestly)
- People potentially making different accounts to jump in and increase their chance of winning claiming its a 'gift' or something for their real account

Theres probably more ways auctions can go but these are just examples i could think of right away. So from a buyer's perspective what's YOUR opinion on the best ways to do auctions?

I personally do not like auctions of any kind, why cause I dunno I hate losing. XP especially if I really want something but am say limited by resources or funding.
That raffle option is cool although i don't think that sorta thing counts as auction style? I mean I guess but I dunno lol. My rng isn't very good so I wouldn't win. ;(

Thats understandable, though auctions are mainly just for pre-made poses and in some artists cases can be a chance to get an interesting pose and pic if the artist is closed for commissions, whereas commissions the sky is mostly the limit on how you want your character posed due to the option of choice and ability to get what you want in your own budget.
Sorry about yur rng being low, stay optimistic and RNGesus will surely bless you with the best loot sometime! After all can never win if you don't take a chance :3

you could come up with some ych in a set pose that multiple people could comission for a set price. i have seen some artist do this.

Yea uniamoon has done that I wish winterfox would consider it too, there's been some ych's I really like.
Course not that I could get them anyway hehe all I seem to want is Gumball. XD

True, the only issue with that is more pics means more work, and squeezing more work between commissions can make a very cramped schedule to fit into a single month if i take too many ;w;

we need more bids  that allow material goods! i mean look at all the great stuff i have to bid with . i have 3 green left footed socks . a slightly used copy of bigger boobs in 30 days. A colored bust of don finkleman. 1 case of green m&ms . a vhs tape of german porn from the 50's . one pair of official John Cena 3d glasses!  A month's supply of placemats from the chinese takeaway . A set of girls trainning wheels for a pink huffy bike . 10 pokemon cards of Taraus , a limited edition "Batmon" figurine from south of the border. 3 T shits with " I'd rathar be fishng " on them . A pair of purple plaid fuzzy slippers. And a half bottle of Gatorade , that i was assured was drunk by Catharine Bach herself !, lemon lime flavored.

I was deeply debating the bigger boobs or the lemon-lime Gatorade, that's some tough choices right there :O

which is why a material auction would rule . he could accept things based on interest or usefulness or practicality rather than intrinsic value :P :P :P

Raffle is the best option as more and more people can enter.
However, you should advice the participants to have the money prepared. If not, like you said, they will end up cancelling because they didn't expect to win.

The only problem would be alt. accounts, but that's a problem we all need to take.

Probably the biggest reason i dont do raffles is cuz of the alt accounts thing, cuz thats unfortunately a huge problem that is big enough that i'd rather not risk it

The second best is no Autobuy.
So you decide what's the best price. Although you will eventually recieve insulting comments regarding it.
Happened to a friend of mine.

-Any limits put on how your bidding just slows the auction down for no reason. For example, if you were to put a $10 max increment on the auction, the person who was going to jump it a higher amount is still going to bid the same amount, only slower.
-AutoBuys are fine, but in my opinion yours are a little low. There's nothing wrong with placing the autobuy a bit higher than you think the piece is worth. If someone really wants it, they will bid the higher price, and if not people will bid as normal.
- I understand the risk of false bidders, but I mean worse case scenario is you open the auction up for another day or so and ban them from bidding again.

All just my thoughts on the subject, but bottom line is an auction should just be a fair auction. There should be no pressure on you for it and I think its a great way to gauge what people are willing to pay for your work :)

You could always open up multiple slots for that one ych, Say about 4 or 5 slots with a buy now price,I know it removes the bidding aspect from the ych.  Just an idea =)

Like i said to soulfire above, I gotta consider workload xD I set a limit on myself to do everything i can to get every commission i take including auction pics within the span of the start of a month to the end of a month. Taking say twenty pics to draw would be both hard to draw and each slot i draw takes away the pictures uniqueness the more people are drawn in that same auction

this seems to be a growing trend... honestly many of us just would like the same pic sometimes :P no pressure tho ..

I think that your list here is more than reasonable for the pros and cons listed. There are other options for bidding that I haven't seen here on IB but they too have pros and cons. I'll keep your formatting to make it more seamless.

Closed bid auction
Each person replies with an intent to bid and then the amounts are sent to you in PM.
The action goes on as normal and the winner is displayed with their amount to prove that it's the highest bid.

Pros:
- Since the bids are submitted blind other people are encouraged to send their best offer first.
- The winning bidder has their bid displayed so others can see that they're the highest one.

Cons:
- People with more money can still strong arm the auction.
- People might not want to bid out of fear that they won't be able to compete with other bidders.

Selective auction
Each person confirms their intent in the thread to bid in the auction. You then select any number that you want for the final round. The people that are selected then place open bids and the highest wins.

Pros:
- People can't simply strong arm their way to a winning bid every time because they might not make it into the final round.
- If people make it to a final round and can't always afford art they stand a higher chance of winning.

Cons:
- If someone get in that on average can afford to price others out, they'll still win in the final round.
- People might be turned off with multiple lost final round attempts and stop trying to get art.

With elimination random final and wild card
Basically the same as the last one accept the winning bid is picked at random. You then select one more person from the original thread that didn't make it into the final and either add them to the final pool before the  winner is picked or choose randomly between the winner of the final round and the wild card.

Pros:
-Same as listed above with the added advantage of someone getting a second chance to win.
-Gives one more chance to weed out strong arm bidders from the final pool.
-Can lower the feeling of not being able to participate all of the time because of the higher chance for participation.

Cons:
-People might feel cheated that they didn't win despite having the highest bid.
-Could encourage lower bids over all, because it no longer matters what is put out to win that final round.

Now, it might be a good idea to mix parts from one with another or come up with something else. Ultimately, it's about the question of what the end goal should be.

Ive been trying. Straight autobuy ychs, simple no bidding someone just pays your price.
Bidding can be exciting but sometimes its good to get a fixed rate
