Mass Effect Andromeda

by
Ok have to put this up because I've now beaten the game (not 100% yet but main story and for anyone who has played full 100% Viability on all worlds with every Ark found and full loyalty baby) but I've also seen a lot of people on the fence about the game.

Lets be honest, ME:3 left people with a bad taste in their mouth and there was a lot of worry about Andromeda. It is true there's a bit of a roughness to game, some animation short comings and a few glitches here and there but nothing too bad. However the game is good, it feels like they took the lessons learned from the previous games and went back to a game that had more of a feel like the first game. They brought the scope down and let us get to know people a bit more. The game is MUCH longer then ME:2 or ME:3 and is more like ME:1 and the story takes a WHILE to get through. The story telling is well done, characters are likeable and plot is strong. If you where on the fence I recommend you take the plunge, the game is WORTH it and fun.

One of the biggest things they did right was worlds. We see a return to ME:1 with a good number of explore-able worlds using a vehicle (one though keeps you on foot) but remembers what was WRONG with that last time. They filled in the blanks and the worlds feel alive and they're not just mostly empty maps with a few note-worthy things on it. For worlds they didn't want to put that much work into they are kept at the system side scan but they remembered to NOT bring back the orbital mining mini-game. However as you go planet side from place to place you can open up a geo-surveyor and play that minigame as you travel just hitting any resource points you find on your way. Giving you something to do when it's peaceful between points.

I'm afraid I can NOT say much on the plot without a pile of spoilers, just know the story is GOOD! and the gameplay is fun. You will fumble at the start though to find your footing, while it keeps to much of what we're used to they've made a few changes that can throw you for a loop at the start before you get your footing. Eventually you'll find what works for you and run with it. Another thing is there is NO MORALITY SYSTEM! Instead the old 'renegade' or 'paragon' actions that popped up during cut scenes are now impulsive actions. IE when you do something off reaction or out of impulse rather then being a moral choice. They leave that to you and the NPCs to look on and decide if it was good or not.

The only real negative thing I have to say is that the character maker needs an overhaul, sadly it feels simplistic and doesn't produce that great of results. I ended up going through my main play through using the default appearances.

Final note for anyone who thinks they need to play through the previous games to play this one don't. While it is useful to have played ME1 and ME2 the game so far has made 0 references or nods to the third game. However you need not worry too much. Andromeda is all about new starts and people moving on. In a way it also represents the writers and teams working to get a new start in the Mass Effect franchise and break away so they could start again. Give them your support, the game is good and fun. (By the way wish more reviewers would recognize the fun factor in a game when doing their reviews >.<)
