I been asked often what my favorite movie is. Well, I always have to explain I don't have a favorite. I have many favorites. So I thought I will give a small list of a few of my current favorite movies.
The World's End
For those that know me at all will know about my love for this film. Is it funnier than Hot Fuzz? No, Hot Fuzz is easily one of the funniest films to come out in the past 20 years. The World's End is, to me, Edgar Wright's best film. It showcases the little details that Wright has become known for, with the crafting of the story, the editing, and the music. The film also gives us Simon Pegg's and Nick Frost's best performances that I seen. The film has many layers of subtlety laying over the simple plot, with the untold truths of the main characters being told through their acting to the pub names and their sign art. Its just a great fun film well worth the repeat viewings.
Watership Down
Loved this film since I was a kid of about 4 or 5 when I caught it on television while visiting family in West Virginia. I only remember seeing it when that young due to the dreams I had about it afterward. It was the first film I bought with my own money at about 8, ordering it from a small country video store that was near my school. The animation is great for the budget and time period that it came out. The musical score is great, and unbelievable when you learn it was made nearly overnight when they had to hire a new composure at the last moment. The story is very faithful to the original novel, only leaving out a number of fables and sticking with only the main core characters and not introducing/keeping newer ones, which prolly helped in the films pacing. Great Voice acting.
Ghostbusters(2016)
This was a huge surprise for me. After months of saying this film would be terrible, it turned out to be possibly better than the original. I could not stop laughing! The special effects were great, the acting was great... okay, maybe not that great. Bill Murray's performance was real stiff and simply not that funny. This is easily Paul Feig's best film, showing off his eye for detail in editing. And producer Amy Pascal obviously has a good eye for what the audience wants. I can not WAIT for the sequels.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
For the longest time, I thought only Marvel Studios could pull off a true function multiverse of film. Man, I was so wrong. Director Zack Snyder, who fully understands comics as proven in his previous film of 300, Watchmen, and the excellent Man of Steel, once again shows he is the best of his field. Superman, having trouble coping with a bleak world that does not want him now has to deal with the vigilante Batman, who has connection with the gangs so to kill off any person he has marked and sent to prison and can see the future in his dreams. And then there is the insane genius of Lex Luther, a billionaire atheist who sees Superman as a threatening God/Devil that must be stopped. The movie perfectly makes you question of who is right and who is wrong in this three way struggle. And then the climatic fight in which the all powerful Doomsday appears along with Wonder Woman. And they even got in scenes of a number of other Justice League characters. Warner Brothers and Zack Snyder did in just two films and a few years what Marvel had to do in seven films and nearly a decade of planning. Bravo WB.
(to make it clear, I love The Worlds End and Watership Down)
