So... Mass Effect Andromeda...

I have a lot to say about this game.

Ninety eight percent of which is positive.

But since I have a lot of friends who are playing, and may not be as far along as I am, I will keep this journal spoiler free.

Also; if by some chance you have beaten the game, please do not spoil it for me or others who may comment.

In short. I've played about 85 hours already since launch, and I'm exhausted.

I haven't slept much. The days are starting to blur together.

But man, am I hooked. I'm playing as female Ryder, currently built as a Vanguard with shotgun and SMG spec'd. The Remnant SMG Equalizer is fucking amazing. (Unlimited ammo on a cool down system plus an extremely high rate of fire with heat seeking plasma projectiles.)

What am I doing with my life?

I promise once I've had my fill I will get back to drawing. X3

~Love and Peace

PS: I've been rolling some ideas around in my head for new comic, and I'm really excited to start fleshing it out. It's just that Mass Effect came at a really bad time. lol

I've heard that it has horrible, horrible animation. I'm currently on Horizon, though.

Edit:in the cut scenes. Haven't heard anything about the gameplay.
MakoRuu
Yeah, it's horseshit. The animations are fine, some of them are spectacular.

The Internet ran away with like five or six scenes in the trailer and it just blew up from there.

Plus the size and scope of the game is so massive. It doesn't even really open up for like the first twenty five hours.

And most major publications didn't even make it off the first planet. So their reviews are moot.

From what I've seen from Horizon it looks pretty terrible... But that's coming from a PC gamer who knows that some console games lack the depth of others.
Beluinus
Lol. Probably the cut scenes. Horizon is actually, from my knowledge, being toted as one of the most visually appealing works of art on console to date. With a pro, it can output in 4k HDR. They've animated ants on trees, if you go into picture mode, you can make out each line of color in her eyes. The cuts scenes I've seen aren't very good.
MakoRuu

All Horizon has going for it is good graphics. lol

(From an actual gaming standpoint. It's very kiddie park.)
Beluinus

Lol. Maybe. I mean, it does have some pretty tough monsters, but once you get down the fighting mechanics, it becomes pretty easy.

This does not play like ME 1-2-3 at all if anything, the feel of it is like ME 1 from the feel, so if /you/ did enjoy ME before then it is worth getting 100%.

favorite  biotic or power combo that you enjoy to use?  I  have my person set up as an explorer,   having to lead off with Incerate, then  Overload to get fire combo then  Biotic lance to get tech combo.  So I get   2 different types of combos back to back, to deal massive damage to an entire group against the kett or remnant
MakoRuu
I'm currently using Charge for closing the distance with a the Remnant shotgun (Which basically has unlimited ammo.)

Then when you get in, Nova if you're surrounded (which I often am.)

And then shockwave for the Biotic combo cause it hits multiple targets. It's amazing for crowd control.
ElMatto

The game is great. Fuck the reviews. Just hit level 30 and having loads of fun. Lots of different combat things to mess around with so I might do some multiple playthroughs. Love the Remnant weapons. Using a Sidewinder pistol IV and the Remnant Assault Rifle IV. Also using a shotgun that shoots streams of lightning, lol.

That being said, my ONLY two complaints is that cover is pretty worthless sometimes. Still get hit in cover and my character doesn't want to go into cover half the time. The other complaint is melee. It's horrendous. Very slow and always over-steps and misses. But there's so much stuff to do and everything else is pretty great so these aren't too big of an issue.

" ElMatto wrote:
The game is great. Fuck the reviews.

You don't know how reviews work, do you?
A reviewer analyses what's good and bad, then you look into what the reasons are and if you would or wouldn't care.

If a reviewer is annoyed by an aspect that you like, then you turn that 'bad' into a 'good'.
You don't look at a reviewers overall score and apply that to yourself. You neither take a reviewers overall score to justify why you like or dislike a game.
ElMatto
I don't believe in reviews at all. Just play the game and judge for yourself. I know the point of the reviews, lol. And I still say fuck 'em. And why do you care about my opinion? Lol.
Retired1
But you can't play a game normally without first paying for it,
reviews are meant so you can make a proper buying decision.

However, people are instead using reviews to justify their beliefs, instead of using them as intended. That's when you get people who attack Jim Sterling just because he happened to not like Breath of the Wild.
ElMatto
I don't do that. For any game. If I'm interested in it, I'll consider it. If not, then don't buy it, lol. When you have to rely on opinions of others, where is your opinion? You don't get an opinion. Ergo, fuck reviews. They need to bring back demos. At least you get a feel for how the game is supposed to be. Same with open and closed betas.
Retired1
You're still failing to see the reason.
I can look up someone's opinion to why they might like or dislike something; if I agree with their reasoning, then we share that opinion; if I don't agree, then we don't share the opinion. I'm not interested in their opinion, but I can use this method to get my estimated opinion.

It's useful if there's a product you would be unsure if you want to get or not.

A demo or an open beta won't represent the full game, maybe not even the base game play (Crash 3 for example).
A closed beta isn't available to the public.
ElMatto
I get the reasoning. You're just having a hard time understanding my opinion on the issue. And that's cool. I'm not asking you to. I don't care for reviews. That's all there is to it.
MakoRuu
The reviewers have a strict time limit they can play certain games.

Mass Effect is one of those games that doesn't open for until like 25 hours in. (Currently at 85, myself.)

And I'd say 9/10 of the big publications didn't even make it off Eos.
Retired1
The time limit depends on how much effort they put into it, and how corrupt that reviewer might be. Some reviewers can put over 20 hours into one game, and that should be enough to make a basic understanding. – If the game haven't "started" even after 20 hours, then it might just be hard for the average person to get into.

25 hours into Andromeda before it gets going?? That's too much for me.
I can put a few hours into it each day, maybe 5 hours max, and it'll take 5 days before it opens up.

"And I'd say 9/10 of the big publications didn't even make it off Eos"
No idea what you're trying to say...
MakoRuu
Eos is the first planet in the game.

All bioware games are like this. My first run through of Inquisition took 150 hours. And I still haven't beaten all the DLC. lol
Retired1
Then that's a great knowledge for someone who are unsure whether to buy such game.
The reviewer can say something like "after 20 hours, I've still haven't left the starting area. Expect this game to be very long."
MakoRuu
That's a huge selling point for an RPG. That you'll be totally immersed and have a real impact on the entire game world.

Instead of rushing through levels being held by the hand like most modern titles these days.
Retired1
Those things aren't mutually exclusive.

A short game doesn't need handholding, and a long game can have handholding.
Personally, I'm all for short and quick games.

If I were a reviewer, I would give ME a lower score due to its length, as I would be someone whom people who prefer shorter games could look up to. This doesn't make me a bad reviewer, it would make me a different reviewer.
MakoRuu
Bioware games cater to a specific type of people, anyways.

So it doesn't really matter if the reviewers give it poor scores. The players still love it.

If you've been on the reddit in the last week, the players are all loving the game.

I just finished it today, actually. And it was amazing.
Retired1
If you like it, fine ... I'm not saying you can't, I'm not saying other people can't.
I'm saying that it doesn't cater to everyone, so some reviewers don't like it, but it doesn't make their views wrong.
MakoRuu
But, a lot of people are acting like it does.

And it creates a huge shitstorm on the Internet.
Retired1
6 years, 12 months ago
And people should really stop caring about another person's opinion that much.
A discussion is fine, but lying and name-calling is too far.

If you hate someone so much you start name-calling them, or tell them to fuck off, then their opinions can't be similar to you so their score won't apply to you. ... This is where the issue lies when ElMatto says "fuck reviewers". Just because you don't agree with their opinions, you don't have to say "fuck" to those people.

The Angaran Firaan is quick with a short animation so misses are less egregious. Definitely worth equipping if you haven't already.

I'm enjoying the game, but I hit some scripting bugs - people saying 'We'll never forget what you did on (planet I hadn't gone to yet)'

My biggest gripe is not enough combat quips. I'm a sniper. If I hear 'Hah! Right between the eyes' one more time I might go ape on my own squad.

Yeah, the game needs another few months of polish and patches.

Actually they released it ahead of schedule.

But in the defense of Edmonton Bioware, they did an amazing job considering this is literally their first game.

Normally they just do grunt work and coding for the other subsidiaries that handle gaming.

I've seen those glitch videos.  Meh; you'd see the same thing with Skyrim or FO4.  Don't care; havin' fun. :3  I've noticed a few minor quibbles here and there, but it's actually been less buggy than a lot of big games I've played, particularly this close after release.
MakoRuu
Those "glitch" videos are literally three and four scenes form the prologue of the game that have been worked out or fixed.

They merely became viral because people love bandwagons.

How far along are you? The game doesn't really open up until after you leave the first planet.
sedkitty
I'm on my way (I think) to finishing the third planet.  It's been an addicting game.  It perfectly balances Doing Important Stuff and Derping Around in a way that appeals to me.  ("I'mma drive up this mountainside because I can.")  Oh, and for the record, my Ryder is caring and snarky, just like me. :3  Also heavily biotic, 'cause Pull and Throw are just so fun.

MakoRuu
I'm also playing a Biotic. About to start working on the fifth planet, but just taking care of some side stuff.

I'm slowly taking on the main story so I don't rush through it all at once.

I highly recommend the Remnant weapons. They're very good for the Vanguard class because they don't run out of ammo and don't need reloaded. (And the clip mods and talents extend the life of the gun so you won't overheat.)

I can literally fire my SMG without stopping because of how quickly it cools off and how much I'm jumping around with Charge and jump jets.

Have you tried the L-86 Halberd? It's fairly awesome.
Orkekum

i dont think so, i tend to find a gun setup i like and stick with it, my tactics suit these guns really nicely.  Mattock for medium range precision, always preferred semi auto. And Viper sniper rifle for long ranged, and a shotgun for short, i forget the name... It's the shotty with a 10 round revolving cylinder on top, fast firing and deadly
MakoRuu

You can buy the Halberd on Kadara Port at the weapons shop.

It's like the Mattock, but just a bit tighter.

I actually prefer the Deluxe Edition bonus weapons. The Pathfinder Pioneer AR is so fucking OP.

So i took the plunge and bought the game(installing right now) i can only PRAY that my PC can handle it. Also is the multiplayer JUST Horde mode or is there more to it?
MakoRuu
I hope your PC runs well!

What kind of hardware are you playing with?

I know it runs well on the now ancient 750 ti.

Multiplayer is waves of enemies that get harder and harder the longer you go. So if that's horde mode, then yes.

However, there have been talks about adding other types of matches, but nothing has been confirmed, yet.
Weiss
So i just tried it, set a couple of settings on medium and it worked fine. Had a few stuttering during intense firefights but nothing too outrageous. My CPU usage was steady at 50-60% usage which is normal for my rig when i play games. So all in all yeah it runs just fine.
And yes that is exactly what horde mode is
MakoRuu
I'm playing on a mix of high and medium, and even my GTX 960 struggles with Andromeda.

Let them get a few months of patching done, it'll be much more stable.

MakoRuu

You should be able to craft one right from the research station.

I had the blue prints when I started.

Eos runs poorly than most of the other planets for some reason. But your GPU is going to explode on Havarl.
Weiss
YEAh i have the blueprints, just need a bit more components to be able to craft it. And honestly i don't think the biggest issue is my GPU, i think it's my CPU, sometimes it's usage shoots all the way to 100%
MakoRuu
I'd have to know both of them before I could tell you otherwise.

But here's a tip to start doing if you haven't already.

Deconstruct the gear you find, it's materials are worth more than the few hundred credits you get for selling it.

If you're ever hurting for credits, there's a Turian trader on Kadara who buys things at a ridiculous price. You could easily make 150 - 300k from her selling items and materials.

Also; buy every Cobra RPG you come across. They're extremely powerful and can help fight bosses. (But they're very inaccurate, so you have to be quick and good.)
Weiss
Well my GPU is a GTX 750 TI as i believe i told you before. My CPU is a Core i5-3350P 3.1GHz

Yeah i figured out about the deconstruction pretty soon and i think i have at least one RPG with me

MakoRuu
You'll definitely want to replace that 750 ti soon. Maybe get yourself a really cheap used 960, or even a 1050 ti if you can afford it.

Hell, if you have the money I'd go for the 3 GB 1060. I'm planning to get the 6GB version if I can raise enough money.
Weiss

Well i got the 750 really recently though, like almost at the end of last year so for now i have no plans on replacing it unless i can find a cheap 960 like you said

Infiltrator is so much fun! I'm sure I'll drop points to make a Vanguard profile further along in the game. Have you dropped any research points on the Remnant scattershot, and if so, how viable is it?
MakoRuu
I'm actually using the Remnant Scattershot as my main shotgun on my Vanguard class.

At rank six it does medium damage, has a great rate of fire for the accuracy, and the thermal clip never needs reloading.

With mods you can extend it to about 18 shots before it will overheat. (But if you take 0.5 second breaks in between for jumping and dodging, you can literally go without stopping or overheating.)

I also have that paired with the Remnant Equalizer with heat seeking plasma.
