Long story short, it's MORPHENOMINAL. It's GOOD!
Go into it with an open mind. Forget your complaints about the Zord designs or the suit designs or Rita's design, and WATCH it. You will find a movie that actually gives a sh** about the lore of Power Rangers, and is well-written and well acted. The action is great, the story is a fresh take on the Rangers' origin, and it fleshes out some of the worst stock cardboard cutouts of characters in kids' tv history and makes them three-dimensional and interesting.
Billy is on the autism spectrum and black. Zack is a thrill-seeking prankster with a great sense of humor. Trini is a loner with issues getting close to people. Kimberly is NOT the vapid bimbo cheerleader she was in the show... and Jason is the one trying to keep them all together as a team. And that's the theme of this movie more than anything else: Stronger Together. And in the end, that is the perfect theme for a Sentai. The movie is about disparate, diverse kids coming together to become the team the world needs them to be... and becoming friends in the process.
It's not perfect by any definition, but go in without deciding to hate it before you see it. Expect action. Expect adventure. Expect character building and character growth. Expect joy and above all, FUN.
...Also, expect very oddly blatant Krispy Kreme product placement.
And May the Power Protect You All.
Skye's Final Verdict: A+. It's not perfect, but it delivered everything I wanted from it, and so I'm giving it that score. If you aren't as big a Power Rangers fan as I am, or if you have a stick up your a** about the designs in the film, you may not enjoy it as much as I did. But give it a try.
