Halo Wars 2 - A bit of a Surprise

by
So first off let me say the following. I'm not a big console gamer and I don't find RTS games tend to translate well to the console. Halo Wars 2 was a rare exception. The developers really thought out the control scheme and what we ended up with was an intuitive and easy to access RTS. It also gave me an excuse to blow the dust off my XBox One and pop a game in.

Now having said that on controls I'd like to say, thank you to 343 for bringing this game back. The original was clunky and needed a lot of polishing but it provided a different experience for players who are not the biggest FPS fan to enter the Halo Universe and oh my god Halo is such a perfect setting for RTS games that I'm surprised they haven't made more of them. Halo Wars 2 while not the longest campaign game was still a rich experience that showed effort and care in their narrative and game play. To be honest it was a lot more engaging then the last Halo game I played as Master Chief. The story also picks up characters they already had and given Halo Wars 2's ending I think we can safely say we'll be seeing more Halo Wars in the future (Or at least some DLC campaigns). At only 12 campaigns like I said it's fairly short at only half the campaign count of an old school RTS however in those 12 campaigns I was challenged a lot more then I've been in a long time and really enjoyed it. On the lore side it was nice to see Cutter return to the stage and given soooo much character, the voice actor needs a raise I say :D wonderful job, but it's also nice to show the three Spartan IIs that still are alive aside from the Chief. In Halo Wars the spartan thing felt odd and they corrected it (you can't build spartans) but still by the end we had a few Spartan IIs that where alive! Just forgotten about in the background. These three are perhaps the most personable, characterized and well crafted spartans I've seen so far for how they're portrayed (Granted not a high bar to leap over if you're not looking at Spartan IVs :P as we have so few Spartan IIs and Spartan IIIs). Still the game ends on a cliffhanger that seems to be designed to sync up with the events of Halo 5. No spoilers but that's something I wanted to note. We may see these three knuckle heads soon else where. Which is nice, we need more Spartan IIs in my opinion as Chief just doesn't do it for me as a main character anymore, simply put John...you're a broken spartan, and you need help. :P

TSDR: Halo Wars 2 is good, I recommend it to any RTS fan despite it's short length.
