Audio books.

by
I think they don't work for me.

I never had interest in audio books because I always saw them as a necessary aid for the blind, but useless to a person who can read normally. However I have found many people on the Internet who use audio books for reasons other than having a visual handicap.

I wanted to give them a try but never had an opportunity.

Some days ago I had to drive 350 miles in a night, so I carried a book in sound format in my cell phone to listen during the trip. I was afraid that music could make me sleepy(er) so decided to listen to someone reading a horror novel.

It was an interesting experience. I drove all the trip stopping only three times to drink coffee and pee. But when I arrived I noticed I had not understood the book.

I went and read the actual book in text form and this time I got it right, I noticed I had missed a few important parts of the narrative.

Could it be the audio book was missing chapters? I checked it and it was complete.

The only explanation is when listening to the book in audio form my attention fluctuates and I miss whole parts. Maybe there are periods where I'm hearing but my brain is not listening.

Anyone else has that problem?

I do have that problem sometimes. my attention and focus can drift. Most times I pause it, but I can sometimes leave it paused for hours and come back confused. I just rewind at that time. Funny thing, the second time you hear something, even if you forgot the first time, It can still seem familiar.

I use audiobooks all the time on my guard shifts and delivery runs. They're great when you can't use your eyes. It has also helped get me through books that I just can't power through in written format. The Wheel of Time series is a great example of that. Also it helps to have a good reader or two, one who does voices and that stuff.

Some people absorb more information by reading it, and others by hearing it. It's all up to how your brain is wired! I have pretty severe ADHD, which makes it hard for me to read books without often having to go back and read the same paragraphs multiple times. For that reason, I find audiobooks work better for me. (so, I guess you're in the opposite position!)

I loved audio books when I was very little. Only books I read now are text books about science shit @.@; I think the thing about audio books is, the narrator sets the tone, instead of your imagination, so I could definitely see it effecting the quality of the read.

I love audio books and its a big help to me as i got read and writing problems. so i read slow and its always a challenge to pick up a book and read it.
But Audio books are good for people who don't need it as a aid as well. A good example is the Harry Potter series which is so well read and he gives each character their own voices so its almost like a play.

If you are driving you will have to divide your attention between the book and the road. Try to sit down and give one your full attention.
For the road i would suggest a book you have already read ones so if you miss parts you wont fall out of the story.

You could try to listen to some of the H.P. Love craft storys read by Wayne Jun, got an awesome voice.

The problem is I didn't realize I had missed anything until I finished the book and the story made no sense.
