Holy Crap, I just had one of the biggest scares of my life!

One of my major projects, Sonic Craft Adventure - a project I've been working hard on for almost 3 or more years now had a major glitch today that almost completely nuked the entire project!

I have no idea what happened but while I was working on one of the main stages (Neo Metropolis Act 1), I noticed one of the loop-de-loops and a chunk of the scenery was missing. I thought it was just a simple error that would go away by itself but the error refused to fix itself.
I tried rebooting, refreshing, respawning, reloading, everything, but the issue would not go away.

This really had me concerned as that loop-de-loop was in a major part of the city stage that connected entire areas together and the fact that it could just be corrupted so easily had me concerned that other areas might of been affected that I wasn't aware of, as I had been working solely on one side of the stage the entire time the glitch was present.

So determined to get to the bottom of the problem I hit /kill in hopes of quick reloading right back at the start of the game in the opening hub and thats when my stomach sank, litually the entire first stage was completely missing and the only thing that was there was the save point area!

I couldn't believe my eyes. In a panic I quit the game and rushed to the internet to find solutions but frustratingly nothing practical arose. I decided to try and load up one of my recent backup files instead and to my horror the glitch was still there. Giant blank void where the loop-de-loop should of been.

I went into the internal files determined to get to the bottom of this. I wanted to see if the filesizes of my backups matched up and if any files were missing. Nothing out of the ordinary was showing up so I had no choice but to either assume everything was equally corrupted or that this wasn't an issue I could fix from outside of the game.

I went back in and determined to see the extent of the damage I tried retracing my steps from Stage 2, act 1 all the way back to the start of the game and thats when my heart sank as I noticed 90% of the entire 1st stage was completely missing!
It wasn't a loading glitch, it was just completely erased!

I didn't know what else to do at that point. 2-3 years of my life dedicated to this project that just erased itself for no apparent reason.
I saw no option but to throw in the towel and just quit...
Why continue working on these projects if they can be corrupted this easily?

I went to take one last look at Neo Metropolis zone before honestly pondering what I should even do with my life now and thats when the entire stage completely vanished for no reason whatsoever!

And thank god it did because it was at that point that I realised it clearly WAS some kind of loading error and not the whole project erasing itself - maybe perhaps something in the task manager overloading JAVA? I dunno.

I simply shut down the computer, rebooted and everythings fine!

Holy shit, I honestly thought I lost everything.

Seriously let that be a lesson to back up your work often and backup the backups on a backed up drive!
Honestly thought I'd lost everything and all I can do is heavily sigh in relief that I haven't.

I'm going to go over the whole project with a tooth comb to make sure nothing really IS corrupted as a result but I can only assume the system was overloaded or overheated or something. (which is odd as this is a new computer) but either way holy shit!

I was honestly about to throw in the towel on all of my projects over this.

Seeing 3 years of hard work go down the drain in a single day over a corrupted file is enough to kill anyones morale, no matter how ambitious their goal was.

UPDATE:

After checking through the game's stages everything seemed to be fine at first but when I got back to the corrupted loop-de-loop where it all started to my absolute horror it was still there!

Within mere minutes the whole situation started again and I couldn't even use the warp points I had hidden in the maintenance tunnels to go back to the hub world as the game was telling me the data didn't exist!

I rebooted the save and thank god, everything is back to normal and surprisingly the glitch is now just gone apparently.

The loop-de-loop is still broken but there are no signs of corrupted code on it, it's just missing chunks of the loop which can easily be replaced.

I'm honestly just worried at this point the entire game's file is corrupted and I should just abandon it and try my luck with an older backup file but the glitch does seem to be gone...

I really don't know.

I'll post again if the problem reoccurs.

ONE FINAL UPDATE:

Ok after going through everything again the main game for the most part seems to be ok (for now at least...) but shockingly all the backup files are corrupted instead.
I've wiped them all from the system as the main game seems to be fixed at least.

Fingers crossed it stays this way.
Thankfully none of my other projects seem to be experiencing this issue but seeing as how easily this issue occurred out of nowhere, it's not unreasonable to assume they couldn't be corrupted just as easily at any given point.

Still not sure what caused the issue in the first place and my guesses are ranging everywhere from too much or too little ram being used to the system overheating.

Either way I'm just going to fix what little seems to have been broken, do a few more tests and then call it a night.

If I don't know what caused the problem I can't fix it but at the same time it seems as if it's out of my control right now so I guess all I can do is keep working on the project and see what happens.
