So Riverdale is a thing...

So the CW network is putting out a new TV drama based on the Archie comic of all things.  I'm watching the first episode right now and they open it with the death of Cheryl Blossom's brother of all things.  It is so WEIRD to hear these characters' silly names said out loud with complete sincerity, especially in a somber moment.  This isn't the first time an Archie Comics property was translated into a TV series, though the only ones I can think of are Sabrina the Teenage Witch (a sitcom,) the Sabrina cartoon (which sucked,) a short lived Archie animated series I saw a couple episodes of but never got a feel for, and the old Josie and the Pussycats cartoon which was basically a Scooby Doo clone.  (Josie and her band came of as REALLY bitchy in this first episode, what the hell?!)  I've read plenty of classic Archie comics over the years but I'm guessing this show is based on the fairly recent reboot that I've never read, which would explain Ms. Grundy...Ms. Grundy was OLD!  She was never any definition of "cougar" and she CERTAINLY wouldn't sleep with Archie over summer break!  My first impression of this show is JARRING AS HELL, but that's as someone more familiar with the pre-rebooted universe.  Can anyone who reads the new Archie comics chime in with how faithful this adaptation is...and also if the rebooted comic is good?  I'm really curious now.
