I see. Hm, in this case may I propose you Dragon Valor on ps1 ? It's a scrolling kind of Beat 'em up/action rpg, where you play a family of dragon hunter trough generation. if I recall well. The gameplay is simple and nice, and the game isn't that ugly.
There is Arslan musou (medieval Persia) or Ninety-Nine Nights series (heroic Fantasy), if you want some Beam'em All. Soul Calibur series can qualify too as a Fighting game (even if more about Renaissance than Dark Ages).

I would suggest Dragon Age, or Shadow of Mordor. Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age Inquisition are both good games with good story lines. Origins takes place in a very medieval style setting with Lords and Kings and such. You goal in the game is to put together an army ti stop the blight. Inquisition is a bit different and I'm not that far into the story but it still takes place in a medieval setting. Shadow of Mordor is more open world and you fight goblins, but it has a similar fighting style with swords and bows and arrows.
