How my Poke'mon Universe Works.

A lot of you have taken interest in how the universe I have built for myself and with friends, involving all our pokemon based characters actually works.  A while ago I promised I would write a journal explaining it all, and now I finally have the time deliver on that promise.

This is going to be a long read, so strap in.

World Basis

This world plays off the canonical one for it's origins, however it is set thousands of years after the current canonical series.  pokemon introduced in newer generations after this world's conception, are retroactively fit in. The present time of this world is reflective of real life, modern human society.  In short, the culture and technology in this universe is similar to ours in real life.

History

Some decades after the current official pokemon canon, tensions between more intelligent poke'mon and humans reaches a breaking point, causing a war between humanity and poke'mon to break out.  Despite trainers and poke'mon loyal to them were stronger than the rebelling wild poke'mon, this war lasted over 100 years.  Trainers and human technology would have given mankind the edge they needed to win this war, if it were not for many highly intelligent, legendary pokemon, (such as Mewtwo), leading the enemy side.

Eventually, humanity was overpowered by the hoards of wild pokemon backed with the power of legendaries.  The loss of the war lead to the near extinction of mankind, liberating pokemon from their trainers, and banishing humans to the harsh edges of the world, while the victorious wild poke'mon took back the earth.  From here, pokemon enjoyed life free from human control, and over time, a good chunk of poke'mon species naturally evolved with forms and intelligence equal to that of humans. This new breed of poke'mon built their own societies, which eventually grew into the modern society that reflects our own today.

During this time, poke'mon have held their own wars and disputes, their own treaties and recorded history. Most of human ways and technology lost to the ages, and having to be rediscovered on their own.

Culture & Technology.

The culture of modern poke'mon in this universe can compared and is equivalent to our own. This is to keep things very relatable, yet simple, and to avoid cheesy poke'mon based puns for every little thing.

The symbol of the poke'ball was first seen as a symbol of human oppression against poke'mon, but slowly evolved into a reminder of their freedom against the ancient humans. it has been 2000 years since the initial war, and most of the tensions and animosity that lead to it have disappeared completely.

Pretty much all world history that has taken place since poke'mon built modern societies, is equivalent to real life world history, and certain species or poke'mon reflect certain races of humans and their cultures in real life.  Again, this is all to keep things easy and relatable.

Poke'mon battles still exist, but they have become skeptical sports comparable to the olympics, and not common team death matches.  Underground/illegal battling, which no rules or regulations, are a thing.

As for technology in general, most of the technology that modern poke'mon have has been either completely rediscovered and recreated by them, or have been based on the remnants of human technology, most of it lost to the ages after the war.  Most human based items, such as medicine, poke'balls, etc, are rare artifacts that never have been recreated.

The extremely potent medicine meant for poke'mon, created by humans, no longer exists.  instead they have developed medicine equivalent to real life brands.  Most failed attempts at recreating this lost medicinal technology, have instead become illegal drugs, such as "Rare Candy".

Poke'ball technology, or anything resembling it, is highly illegal, and considered a federal offence just to own.  it has become a black market tool for slavery and trafficking.

Weapons are a thing.  Conventional and nonconventional weapons we have in real life exist in the world. This is due to a combination of modern poke'mon being naturally weaker than their feral, ancient counterparts, coupled with chip implants that further hinder poke'mon move potency and abilities, becoming government standard world wide. This particular topic will be addressed further down.  overall, poke'mon moves and abilities are no longer powerful enough to be weaponized, turning to external weaponry.

Legendary poke'mon that are not vital to the balance of the entire cosmos, have become very common and therefore no longer considered "legendary".  Prime examples are: Mewtwo, Mew, Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres, Lugia, Suicune, Raikou, Entei, and so many more.

Biology

Only about 1/3rd of poke'mon species have evolved to become more human like, or "anthropomorphic".  Most of these species involve poke'mon that already had high intelligence and human characteristics to begin with. (being bipedal and able to understand human speech are huge contributors to this factor.) Nearly all mammal based poke'mon have become anthro, while most marine, insectoid, object based, amorphous, and plant based poke'mon have remained feral, with no hints towards human like evolution. There have been exceptions to this, but not many.

As you can imagine, the entire occurrence of sentient, anthro poke'mon, completely threw the food chain and ecosystem out of balance.  poke'mon that used to prey on each other, have now found alternate food sources, and in modern times, have learned to synthesize foods that can no longer be harvested, due to the source becoming sentient.

Despite the irony, feral poke'mon are used as sources of food, for labor, etc.  There are also many species of feral poke'mon that are considered dangerous monsters that should be avoided (ex: being ditto)

Most anthro poke'mon have human like genitalia, and not all poke'mon lag eggs.  Most of them have evolved into giving live birth, or retaining egg laying, depending on species and environment.

Poke'mon Moves & Abilities

As mentioned before, modern anthro pokemon are not nearly as powerful as their ancient, feral counterparts.  Even the feral poke'mon of this current time are not as powerful, due to not having to fight each other as hard to survive, or defend against consistent human threat.

On top of that, suppression chips are implanted into anthro poke'mon born on record, which keeps possible  dangerous abilities and features in check, and at constant, non-lethal levels.  This includes the potency of poison poke'mon, the endurance of rock and steel types, the level of mental power of psychic types and the potency/intensity of elemental types.

Flying type and levetating poke'mon, must obtain special licenses to fly over 10 feet heights inside towns and cities. Flight is banned inside of more indoor buildings. primarily government ran facilities.  Using destructives moves without a license to do so or inside facilities that prohibit it is illegal. Digging inside towns and cities without the proper permit to do so is also illegal. This of course is was instated due to rock and ground types. Poke'mon that can move at high speeds, are restricted to using designated paths to do so, as to not interfere with traffic or civilian safety, or otherwise must have a license to do so. High speed diving follows similar rules and regulations. Ghost poke'mon are completely banned from using their ghostly abilities for possession or malicious intent. Psychic poke'mon are not allowed to control or alter the minds of others.

Overall potentially destructive poke'mon moves are illegal to use in public unless having license to do so.

Beliefs and Religion

Poke'mon that serve as gods and maintain cosmic order, are seen as and worships as such.  That is all that needs to be said

Humans

Humans, who were brought to the brink of extinction, and banished to the harshest corners of the world, have slowly reintegrated with the world over the millennia.  Humans are now allowed to live near poke'mon society, but in their own isolated villages and colonies.  Most human technology has been lost, and had to be recreated or poke'mon technology brought into human society.  however due to still lingering racial tensions between poke'mon and humans, most human societies  receive lower grade technology compared to what poke'mon use.  on top of this, most human colonies try their best to avoid having anything to do with poke'mon at all.  The colonies that do decide to interact and trade with poke'mon society, are seen as minorities, surrounded with a lot of misconceptions and general prejudice, despite most of the tension and reasons that started the war vanishing from reality.

Given the presence of groups like Team Plasma and the Aether Foundation, were there any humans who sided with and fought alongside the pokemon in the rebellion?
TanukiArts
7 years, 2 months ago
They would have tried to, but poke'mon leaders refused to trust humans to fight alongside them, and forced them submit and away, same as the rest.

Basically saying that if their poke'mon want to fight, they should be given the choice to, not to be made by a trainer, no matter what the cause, and without a trainer to command them.

I like this a lot. It does help clear things up and paint a much clearer image.

I'm in love with this lots ;w; <3 ~

But how about pokemon or humans that still resent each other? Enough to get violent, or.. Perhaps create a small, or large underground society of crime, slavery, trade, or any of that sort?
TanukiArts

All of that is a problem actually.  Crime is a part of every society, including organized crime.

Iiiiiii feel a bit mixed about this. On the one hand, it feels like it's some good stuff, and I'm glad that there is a consequence for the pokemon becoming anthro. That's good.

On the other hand, I feel a bit weird about them moderating each other with these dampener chips, particularly for things that are less than dangerous. Why bring down the endurance of rock and steel types, for example? It feels like that's something that doesn't hurt anyone else and only hinders them.

Mostly, I'm curious why they'd want to bring it down so much rather than tweaking it to be specific to the rather dangerous moves.

I imagine the endurance of rock and steel types gets hindered because if those Pokemon realize almost nothing can hurt them due to their endurance, they'll be able to get away with doing more illegal stuff like robberies and the like. After all, if bullets can't hurt them, what is there to fear from the local police force?

Nail on the head.

"Psychic poke'mon are not allowed to control or alter the minds of others."

Even if it's willing? As in, a Pokemon has a fetish towards being mind controlled?

They can do whatever they want when it's consensual and behind doors. ;P

For those wondering, to do the "é" in Pokémon it's press and hold ALT, and then on the numpad (with numpad enabled, aka the numpad light is on) you type 0233, and then release the ALT key.  No idea how it's done on the Macintosh operating system if that's what one uses, but it's a standard ASCII character code so should theoretically work.

Also, does this mean that the concept and utilization of mega evolution has been lost to the general public? Without humans and the key stones I don't see very many megas walking about.
TanukiArts
7 years, 2 months ago
Mega evolution (as well as Z-moves) are not totally lost. Poke'mon are now sentient enough to use them without a trainer, but since they are tools for fighting, whatever is left as been made illegal to use for combat (without proper licenses, usually only granted to peace keepers)

Wow, sounds like a deep world you've built up there!  On the topic of technology though, what have Pokemon in your canon done with space?  Any Pokemon gone to the moon?  Made space stations?  And what about Pokemon implied to have extraterrestrial origin?
TanukiArts
7 years, 2 months ago
Space exploration has gone as far as it has to our real life, with similar results.  Pokemon like the eyegleam line and Deoxys have not evolved to a more anthro state.  Why? well because they're aliens, the rules are different for them.

And what about the Ultra Beasts?  Has there been a stable connection formed with the world/dimension they come from?
TanukiArts
7 years, 2 months ago
Under normal circumstances, Ultra Beast would never cross into this world.  I would say that they are already evolutionarily perfect, and therefore in their own dimension, wouldn't become more anthropomorphic than they already are within their home world. They are built to deal with the ecosystem of their own world (and I don't know nearly enough about it to change anything).

However Ultra Beast who have spent extensive time in this world, have been so influenced by it so much that they may have undergone the evolutionary anthropomorphic change as well.  Despite being from ultra space, they have become a part of this world. This may not apply to all of them, some of them definitely  could have changed to better fit the environment and ecosystem of this world.

However any ultra beast fresh out of ultra space, would not have any of these changes.

First of all, wonderful worldbuilding. It's clear you worked long and hard on this.

Secondly, I have a question: since the Pokémon that decimated humanity were responsible for ending not only "slavery" but also truly strong and loving relationships between human and Pokémon, are there any groups that resent this?
TanukiArts
7 years, 2 months ago
Thanks!

And perhaps at first, but it has been thousands of years since the war ended.  By this point, history is a little skewed and most of the older ways have been forgotten.  The master/trainer dynamic, and all the negative as well as positive aspects of it, now seem like a myth from both sides.

They only have recorded history to remind them that it ever happened in the first place, and of course each's side's telling of that history can be skewed.

In short, it's like us modern day people trying to make an uproar about how the romans conquered so many other civilizations.  it happened so long ago that none of us can relate to it at all, and therefore don't really care in relation to the present.
Hawkye
7 years, 2 months ago
I suppose the only difference is I don't have any lingering animosity towards the Romans for conquering my ancestors. :P

But yeah, that makes sense. I guess I'm just the kind of person who'd like to see unlikely friendships and moving towards a better tomorrow, hehe.

I guess, the question here is, what happens to humans being raised by these pokemon (via adoption or fostering), or if there are humans raising Pokemon children (via adoption/fostering) How are they treated in society  and is it common? I'd imagine if it was common, it'd be the equivalent of, say,  white families adopting African orphans. when it comes to Poke-folk raising humans.

Also,  that also makes me wonder,  could Pokemon interbreed with humans? Especially those in the Human-like egg groups
TanukiArts
7 years, 2 months ago
Those scenarios are so rare they are pretty unheard of. However with the very few instances that have happened, it is definitely trialing on the families.

And no, humans are incompatible with Poke'mon for breeding.

Hmmm sounds like a great idea can't wait to see the outcome of this

Another thing I thought about. Is this a pokemon world that only has pokemon and humans or is it the one with pokemon and real life animals mixed together with the humans?
TanukiArts
7 years, 2 months ago
Just poke'mon and humans.  Poke'mon have completely replaced real life animals.  the world wide ecosystem did suffer a bit when a good chunk of poke'mon became sentient and stopped eating each other, but they got used to the changes and solved the food problems with time.

Are there Pokémon/human couples or is it like a forbidden relationship?
TanukiArts

It's not forbidden but it's incredibly rare.  It's something that certainly turns heads.
