Review: Final Fantasy 15

by
I’ve logged 63hrs playing Final Fantasy 15.

Overall, it is a fun game, And it’s a joy to play. I can tell that care went into the game, and I can tell it was produced by people who enjoy games.

Graphically, this is a /modern game/. It looks like it’s taking advantage of the modern hardware it’s produced on. Things move fluidly and naturally. I feel like we have arrived on the other side of uncanny valley. In many places, It’s easy to forget it’s a video game at all. Environmental sound is natural as well, with no noise or music track seeming out of place, save for the music tracks of your own choice.

In gameplay, There’s very few times where things feel like they are outside your control. The occasional scripted event in a fight does jerk you out of immersion however. But it does feel like you have true agency with a wide variety of strategies to work with. I want to say that I grinded very little, but that is not the full truth- I am a sucker for side missions, and that’s where most of the experience lays. You earn far more experience in side missions then you do in looking for random encounters.

Storywise, The world is very well thought out. It’s rich in it’s own lore, with no need to draw on any past games. There’s enough to delight fans of the series, but one definitely need not know of them at all. For the lore-hungry, there’s a lot of external supplemental material to this game, but none of it is required to enjoy it in game. It does suffer overall from one little problem-

Gripes, I do have a share.Though the game was made with love and care, I do feel like, as is a problem with MANY MANY games, there was a point where producers and executives jumped in and forced the development to rush. I feel I can say this without spoiling things: If YOU pick this game up, linger in chapter 8 for awhile before moving forward in the main story.

There does seem to be some post-game content I’ve yet to touch up on though.

Is it worth $20? That would be a steal for this game. Is it worth $60? Actually yes. It takes a lot for me to say a game is worth $60 but in no way do I feel regret for my purchase. In fact, It may even be worth grabbing the season pass or a deluxe edition, if you think of that extra money as both a Tip, and a way to tell the gaming industry that this is the direction AAA games should be going.

After so many disappointments from Square-Enix, it is very refreshing to have a game I not only enjoyed, but have become excited about.

For beginning game content, There's an optional in depth tutorial to walk you though the battle system.
Otherwise the game does not hold your hand for very long at all.

To be fair to the execs rushing development along, the game was in development for 10 years and running on some pretty major No Man's Sky-tier hype as to what the game would include; so to some degree they needed to rush it just to make sure it got done at all. A lot of what was planned did end up getting dropped, but I feel it is what allowed the game to even be released so I'm OK with it. Even if it does get a little jarring.
