Need new virus protection (solved)

Well my "free" virus protection that I've had for over a year suddenly hit me with a paywall that wasn't there before. Now it won't let me update the virus database without a ransom. Fuck that. I need something good and free.

Been looking up reviews and comments. I've used Avast before, but I see lots of negative comments on it. The comments suggest that Avira and Bitdefender are good choices, only that Avira can be sluggish. Will probably go with BD (hehe, same initials as bad dragon X3)

You are not going to find very good free ones.

True. My start menu lags hard. You know the thing they've been working on since 1995? DX

I use avast, that's what I would suggest. I have heard avg is good too.

I've used Avast. I remember having some problems with it, but don't remember what they were. Also seeing very negative comments everywhere. AVG has screwed me over way too many times with bad updates and both times I couldn't remove it without going into safe mode.

AVG has screwed me over too many times. Twice I got bad updates, and had to go into safe mode to manually uninstall it.

AVG and Avast are usually pretty good.  I usually lean more toward Avast, though, due to ease of customization during installation.  The free version is ad-supported and you can't shut the ads off, but for the most part the program itself is pretty solid.  The only other gripe I have about it is you have to register for an account in order to get updates after thirty days, I think it is.  But that only takes an email address and confirmation (and I think it subscribes you to some spam, but it's easy enough to unsubscribe from that).

Nope to AVG, and I think from what I've seen and read so far, I'm probably going to go with BitDefender.

There's no such thing as a good 'free' anti-virus, they all nag for you to register.

Personally, I only run Malwarebytes.. yes, I know it's only for Malware, but I've never been hit with a virus in 30 years of computing because I'm careful where I download from, and only open attachments I'm expecting.

I can deal with the nagging. I just mean as opposed to the ones that don't work at all unless you pay.

Avast Antivirus and MalwareBytes Anti Malware both together work great they are the first things i install on any pc i get and both are free

I have IObit malware fighter, installed by a friend, as well as Advanced System Care, and that seems to keep me going, but from what I've seen on reviews and comments, BitDefender seems to be a better choice than Avast.

If you're on Windows 7, I've had good results and heard several times that Microsoft Security Essentials is good.

If you have Windows 10, Windows Defender isn't really too shabby.

I'm going to avoid Windows 10 for as long as possible.
