Started up in Briton after the Brexit vote, people over in England started wearing the pin to counter the underlining hostility to immigrants that was a motivating factor in leaving the EU and show there are people that don't harbor ill will towards people that had immigrated to the country and were of different racial decent.
Many have taken to wearing the pin over here in the US, trying to counter the fear and concerns over the charged and racial tone Trump has used during the Election. An admirable goal I support full-hearted.
There is an addition I'd like to add to this group that I'd like to reassure.
I have witnessed a level of hostility being posted amongst journals and comments here on IB that has lead to blocked accounts and verbal assaults that have gone beyond the pale.
In response to this I would like people to understand this symbol is not intended to be a judgment on anyone but a sign that I'm not willing to attack anyone and will listen to any concerns without bias on my part.
I would like a return to respectful verbal discourse because the alternative will only add to the hostile emotions swirling about already.
In America? eeeeh... I'd see people using the Safety pin thing to lure people into a false sense of security, and kidnapping, robbing, forcing themselves upon, or killing someone foolish enough to believe in someone wearing a pin.
Not saying I don't admire what it means, but... I highly doubt it'd work in America.
The safety pin thing could work in europe. In America? eeeeh... I'd see people using the Safety pin
When Mississippi passed it Religious Freedom act that allows businesses to refuse service to LBGTs, many businesses in the state placed signs in their stores saying they were open to all customers. A great many Christian Conservatives organizations complained that the signs were going against the law, but there were no real legal or criminal acts used against the businesses or committed against those that trusted the sings. And that was in Mississippi.
I have no doubt that there are some that might use the pin in a luring way to commit a hate crime. The KKK does want to conduct a parade in North Carolina in support of Trump after all.
But I feel the vast majority of people wearing the pin would be due to the original spirit of them.
