Reminder: You are loved

To all my friends out there post-election day, who are hoping and striving for equality, whether you're cis or trans, straight or gay, anything at all. You're still loved, you're still real. The people who support you are still here, even if right now it feels like America just flipped against you. I don't know how to put it eloquently, as it's 4am where I am, and I'm pretty much in a panic, but I wanted to at least say something to remind us all that we're still here for each other. The people who support you did not disappear over night, and I mean both your immediate circle of friends and the people who voted for your rights.

Please don't give up on things. Don't give up being you, don't give up your beliefs. I'm sorry if this is a weird or corny journal. It's late and I am crying quite a bit right now.

It's okay to cry.

It's okay to grieve for what we've lost, what we are scared and unsure of.

Go right ahead and do it. Tomorrow will be another day, yes, but let yourself grieve.

Someone said that to me fifteen years ago when I was in college and our country faced the biggest disaster it had ever seen on an overcast September day.

Still holds true...and don't worry about people baiting you into an argument. That sort of wrongheaded distraction is the kind of thing that got us here in the first place.

Chin up. c:

well, people are convinced he's going to take their rights away and work against them.

We saw similar shit from republicans when Obama won and they thought America would become a socialist country. I personally believe it's overblown like it always is.

A lot of my loved ones are part of the LGBTQ+ crowd, myself included, and now the government is in the majority of people who think they shouldn't have basic rights. I feel it would be mad not to care about that.
Bianca

What sort of basis is there for the melodrama? What kind of stuff do you expect to have happen post election? Is there going to be a sudden vacuum of rights? His acceptance speech was pretty unifying, even going so far as to invite his naysayers directly. Not to mention, Trump recently waved an LGBT flag around on stage, is that not somehow meaningful?

If there was a real concern, the youth voter turnout would have been much higher.

Sounds like you have your head in the clouds. I don't think anything I say is going to sway you at this point if you really feel this way, so please just leave at this point.

His VP advocated "conversion therapy" and recently made it a felony in his state for same-sex couples to apply for a marriage license. He is also a member of the party that brought us the bathroom bill, among a whole host of other reasons.

So yeah. Concern is justified.
Bianca
7 years, 5 months ago
I'm not saying there aren't problems with the republican party, the senate in particular is the quiet danger. But, the melodrama surrounding Trump's election is akin to the Republican outcry at Obama's potential welfare state. Concern is always justified, crying despair, doom, and the ruin of everything... maybe not so much.

Especially not to the point of needing to stay home or feel in danger. :s (Though, at least the Supreme court has protected same sex, it's going to be hard to erode that.)

PS: the bathroom bill I want to say is a whole lot of useless noise and both sides of that entire thing are... something.
Malachyte
7 years, 5 months ago
I'm not saying anything at all about not leaving your home or that everything is ruined. The whole journal is just to make sure people know they're not alone, yet you seem to want to pick a fight with it? You say you're being level-headed, but all you're doing is trying to bring up drama of your own where none was warranted. Please leave it be, or make a post about your views on your own page or in private with people.

It is beyond the scope a little, yeh. But still, I don't think I should feel like America's flipped on me just because some blustery balding orange faced peach has taken office. :s

Is it a bad time to point out she voted against trans rights every time as well?
AvaBun

Yes; because at least she didn't encourage up front and blatant hatred of it while doing so.

Welcome to an america where being up front about your hate of other people's life preference is valid and encouraged.

It's terrifying to think that what happens in the US has a bit of a habit to roll over to other countries to some extent.
Here in Australia it's already hard enough fighting for marriage equality, and I don't actually know the extend of difficulties us transgender folk have to wade through, but to think that it may be made even harder, is frightening.

Thank you for the kind journal entry.  I feel disgusted right now.  I served in the Navy for 5 years, and right now I feel no love for this country or its people.  I am disgusted beyond words.

I stayed up late too, walked with my friend on my college campus and saw 3 guys with Trump Pence flags were parading around obnoxiously like we had just received the biggest blessing possible. Today I'm going to be surrounded by people like this, and to be quite frank I'm afraid of them being a partially black openly bisexual person. Guess I have to hide who I am now to avoid conflict. At all times. Just like the good ol' days. Yay. As if I already didn't have to look over my shoulder with all the shit this country is going through right now as it is.

On the ever-so-dull bright side, at least I still have a trove of friends who also think this whole situation is a load of bullshit and will be there for me if things go south.
Malachyte
7 years, 5 months ago
Same, yeah. I live in a pretty unsafe neighborhood, so I'm worried that if I do go to protests or rallies for rights, I might legitimately be in danger. I can only imagine how it is for you as a person of any amount of color. If you can, carry pepper spray, and always walk with friends. Be safe, I want to see you at AC next year *hugs*

If it's any consolation, at least the conservative party doesn't like Trump either, and neither does half of the country. With any luck he won't get much done, will piss off a bunch of people and will get kicked out by the next election.

But I share your concern, electing a representation of racism, sexism, xenophobia and hatred has more effect than the powers he has. It also sends a message to other people, and that has unfortunate consequences.

And indeed, don't give up. Now it's going to be more important than ever to get involved and push back.
Malachyte

My feelings exactly, on all of it. I'm going to do my best to actively vote on things I can, and even try out volunteer work for the first time for organizations that promote freedom. Sitting down and doing nothing is the worst thing that can be done.

I really like this journal.  To be honest, reading it is what lead me to send you that note. ^_^

Personally, I haven't slept since yesterday.  I've been full of anxiety and fear.  Not necessarily for myself, but for the future of civil rights, the future of our foreign relations, and the future of the country as a whole.  I've seen some positive things posted here and there, as well as a Tumblr post that details a few things the president cannot do (that a lot of people have feared Trump will do), and they've kind of eased my mind a little.

Thank you for posting such a kind sentiment. :)
Malachyte

You're very welcome. I've been learning a lot, too, about what a president can actually do and the like, and it's helped me calm down as well. A lot of us are really uninformed about the situation, and so we're even more scared than we might need to be. That's why we've got to do our best to just be really openly kind.

Well, now I'm starting to worry about growing racism.  I read a thing on Twitter that was a collection of tweets about racists targeting minorities with vile words, chants, and in some cases violence, most, if not all in the 24-hours after the election results were in.

I'm not worried for myself.  I'm not a minority.  But I have online friends who are, and my 14-year-old cousin, who lives on the other side of the country, is bi-racial (half-black).  I'm worried for them.  For their safety.  Because it seems like some racists have been emboldened by Trump's victory.  Taunting Hispanics about the proposed wall, tearing hijabs off of Muslim women, and being openly racist toward Asians and black people, among other things.  One story even told of kindergarten children picking on a Hispanic classmate about the wall.  It's sad and frightening at the same time.

I have no idea how the racial divide will be mended now.

I greatly appreciate the words of solidarity, and am very sympathetic to you and your lachrymose state when you wrote this. The polls were all so wrong. We even had the video of him basically confessing to being a predator... I was gravely concerned as the night wore on, and then pessimistic and dismayed after midnight. Practically anything imaginable is now possible because Trump is that unstable and narcissistic. I am surprised I was able to sleep for a few hours. I honestly wonder whether something is wrong with me for not having severe anxiety over this, though I can speak to my new therapist about that next Monday.

For the people who suspect we are being melodramatic, we aren't. There probably won't be very elevated levels of violence immediately afterwards, and as a femboy I'll feel about as safe in Atlanta (which is an LGBT-friendly enclave in the South) as I did before (though I always have my sprays with me). The problem is, the President nominates federal judges and appoints leaders of federal agencies such as HUD (housing) and EEOC (employment). Judges interpret laws, and agencies interpret the law they are tasked with enforcing. There are currently federal protections for LGBT people via the courts and federal agencies, and this will not be the status quo for long it seems. To propitiate Republicans, he has aligned himself with the Christian right-wing, a group which is extremely antithetical to LGBT people. HUD may cease interpreting "sex" as including people like me, the EEOC might cease considering "sex" to include LGBT in general, the Supreme Court will no longer consider marriage equality constitutionally protected, and the lower courts' attitudes on the Sex category will start reverting to what it was decades ago.

Strategically for people like me, this is disastrous, possibly catastrophic. This sucks.

And that doesn't even begin to touch on the myriad of other concerns. Great going, America.

We have to have faith that in the long run, progress will continue as always. There are always big struggles and set backs, but overall, I really believe that we're headed to greater and greater understanding of what tolerance and acceptance look like.

I'm more level-headed today and learned a fair amount this afternoon!

I strongly believe that computers and the internet are miraculous inventions which have extremely dramatically influenced and improved every facet and level of human civilization. The advent of less strife over moronic crap is one of the benefits. Because we have entered the Information Age and there has been this unstoppable and mindboggling level of proliferation of information, humanity has attained tolerance and secularization at an extremely rapid pace. I don't see why this wouldn't continue to be the trend over a large period of time in the future.

However, because of our system, one person and his party has relatively little stopping them from tipping the balance in various federal apparati in the other direction. I actually did additional research before sending this, because I was going to say "nothing" originally but suspected I was wrong. I was actually more in error than I first believed, especially on cabinet appointments. I should have done this first, but I guess I was overcome by commiseration.

Cabinet members and judges both must be confirmed by the Senate. Republicans barely have a majority and I would hope at least a couple of them are sick of the anti-LGBT fixation. There is a tradition which really ought not exist called a filibuster, which is deliberately running out the clock. It takes 60 votes to break that unless the defenders screw up. Republicans could use some procedure I still don't fully understand which would require a simple majority to break the deadlock, but both sides call it "the nuclear option" and seem highly averse to invoking it. There seems to be a tactical and strategic version of it.

So, I surmise the Democrats will probably force Trump to nominate less unpalatable people because the Reps would lack the numbers and/or will to go nuclear. However, it's quite possible the Reps will be extremely united and eager to follow Trump's example by using the tactic. Trump could then have rubber-stamped anyone he wants for his Cabinet and the courts. The three Supreme Court justices who are 80+ are liberal (two) or moderate (one). If the current vacancy and the aforementioned 3 judges were replaced by conservatives, if Obergefell was retried, we'd lose 7 to 2. DOMA would be left intact 7-2. Lawrence would be reversed. We'd have no protection at the federal judicial level, and none at the federal agency level.

I never liked filibusters, but now I really hope the Dems use it often to preclude a rout. Maybe one or two Reps will be swayed by the power of the internet meanwhile. Also, I'm sure the far right even now lacks the support to federally impose discrimination on individual states, so there's that.

Honestly, I'm not too worried. Why?

Because the people who are fighting against the rights of the LGBTQ community are in a war of inevitability, and they're on the losing side.

They can dig their ground, they can build their walls, they can do whatever they want to try and snuff out the rights for those of any sexuality to be open and free. But it will not work.

Time will continue to trudge on, and the world will continue to fight on. Every generation people will fight for their rights, for their freedom, and every generation more and more people will join and continue that fight. Meanwhile those who would spread hate and persecution will become fewer and fewer, until they are the ones in minority.

So yeah, maybe Trump's Presidency will stall out progress. But people will continue to make their voices heard, and the voice for equality will grow ever louder and resounding. They will not now, nor ever truly win. They might throw pitfalls in the road to equality, but they will never be able to put a complete stop to the fight for LGBTQ rights.
Malachyte
7 years, 5 months ago
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I'm not so much worried about the long term state of things like this, but for the short term. I worry about violence towards the LGBTQ+ community increasing for a bit, and about the friends I have who live in conservative areas or with conservative parents. Those are the people in very immediate dangers, for me.
