Nintendo Switch

by
So just a few minutes ago, Nintendo released a trailer featuring their new console. Just like they said, and what the leaked designs showed, it is a portable home console that uses  cartridges. (Better blow on 'em to make sure they work!)

Personally, it's still quite a surreal step Nintendo has taken,  but I'm quite concerned as far as portables go. I was really late in getting my 3DS and it looks like this console will make both the 3DS and Wii-U obsolete. I'm honestly glad I didn't buy that, but will this hurt the company? I hope it's cheap, at least 200-250 bucks...

I'm gonna be honest here. Nintendo has gone pants on head retarded as of late with the gimicky consoles. This will likely be one of, if not the, last straw for them as a console manufacturer and they could very well go third party after this flops like the Wii U did.

The Wii was a gimmicky console, but it sold a lot of money for them. It's cash cow was Wii-Fit, and it brought in a new generation of gamers into the consumer industry. The only reason the Wii-U flopped is the fact they gave it a horrible name. It took unitl  late 2014 for people to realize it was a new console.

As much as this direction concerns me, I kinda doubt The Switch will flop  because if it being gimmicky simply becasue it will be part home and handheld console. Nintendo already dominates the handheld market, so now they're just merging their  products together which I think is kinda smart. They also have room for third party games now, so to top that with their pretty good exclusive franchises, they could fare well.

The problem relies on how they market the NS, yes I call it NS for Nintendo Switch.

Importantly too, its not a control schema gimmick like the Wii/Wii U. the way you hold the controller is slightly different, but its much more in line with the other console experiences otherwise. No tablet pad, no motion controls, etc. It will make it much easier for 3rd parties to come back to Nintendo, rather than trying to have to shoehorn their game into a weird control system. Switch may have a good amount of power in it too (some custom Nvidia card) to run that stuff, which would help too.

It seems they have courted a bunch of 3rd party people already. Even Fromsoft (Souls games on the Nintendo maybe!?)

With respect to the WiiU, it also had a really shit library for about 1-2 years, making it extra pointless for many to buy the console.  Like, smash 4 didn't come out until 2 years after. Mario maker, the game that probably showcased the Wii U schema the best, also was super late in the cycle. Hopefully Nintendo has learned and puts out the Switch with a strong release and early-cycle catalog.

Also, robust portable multiplayer would be really cool for a new Smash Bros game. (or a Melee remake)

Pretty much. Event hen, The 3DS alternatively, had a good library from the start.

Yeah!

3ds has always been great and I hope they continue that legacy of really fun, unique portable experiences.

I disagree on this point. I picked up a 3ds at launch and the choices in games were abysmal for months, the only first party game at launch was nintendogs

People should really consider what this is.
Imo it's the sign that they gave up on their home console. I consider this the successor to the 3DS, that you can also connect to a TV.
Especially given the fact that it uses cardridges.
Furthermore, the 3DS will be 6 years old when the Switch comes out. The period between the DS and 3DS? Also 6 years.

Nintendo will focus their resources on one console. A hybrid. And I think it will help them get some focus back. If it will also bring back the non-Nintendo crowd? No idea, but I know I'm getting one.

You could say that, or you could say they wanted to merge their markets together. It's not a bad idea per se, but for someone like me who got their 3DS late in the game,  I admit I am a bit disappointed they didn't give the New 3DS a couple of years. The existence of the Nintendo Switch was the sole reason why  I didn't buy a Wii-U

I thought it was pretty obvious that the New3DS was just another DSi attempt to get some money from the people that always want the newest thing, no matter what. It was never intended to be the real successor.
After all, even that bit is almost equal. The DSi came out after 4 years of the DS. The N3DS came out in the 4th year of the 3DS.

Ever since the first rumors of the hybrid came up, I knew that the 3DS would also most likely be the last of its kind.
And I like this move. Nintendo has had a hard time focusing on two consoles whenever there was a lack of 3rd party support. This move may also be a backup plan just in case the Switch isn't as succesfull with the 3rd party as they want. It allows them to focus every resource on it, instead of splitting it between a handheld and a home console.
