Guys, I've been feeling stressed lately, and I need someone to talk to...

Being part of a fanbase can be really frustrating, and sometimes even makes me feel outright depressed...  Especially since this is the Sonic fanbase, which is well renowned for how unpleasant some fans can be.

And in recent days, it's been aiming at me at full force.  You see, it all started with a Youtube video showing gameplay of Sonic in Lego Dimensions.  It showed him in the Adventure Time stage, and there are two lines from Sonic that make this stick out.

"Lumpy Space Princess, huh?  Last time I met princess was...  Um...  You know I don't quite remember, nevermind."

"Aw yeah!  This is happenin'!  That sounded a lot better in my head...

Now to me, I see a couple of clever little nods to previous games.  But in both that video's comments, and on multiple Deviantart pieces, I've seen people seeing those little jokes as "Proof that the franchise is going to die in 2017."

I've tried to reason with them that this is a ridiculous, and that little jokes like that aren't meant to be taken seriously.  But within the past two days, I have had no less than 10 different people at my throat, calling me out for "not being a fan", being a "mindless drone", a "worthless idiot", and even someone suggesting that I should kill myself...

Is this really how far downhill things have gone for us?  Have we, as a fanbase, gone to such a state of loathing that a cute little throwaway gag in a game where Sonic isn't even the main focus should be used as a weapon to attack Sega, as well as anyone else who actually likes it?

It's honestly getting me pretty depressed.  And that's something that I've been struggling a lot with this past year...

Now, I'm starting to wonder...  Am I the one who's wrong?  Are these little jokes actually something to be upset about?

Should I change my stance and join in, in the hopes that the people will respect me more?  Is it worth giving up my individuality, and join the horde, just so I can feel accepted?  Because if I stand firm about something that I genuinely feel about, that means that people will hate me for it...

Everywhere you go, you always hear people saying "be yourself".  But the fact is, if I be myself, then people will hate me for it.

Should I become something I'm not, just to be part of something?  Do I lie to them, and myself, just to be accepted?

Or do I stand firm, and say that I enjoy this, but take the verbal abuse that they throw at me?

Please comment and let me know what you think.  I could use some advice right now...

(Please do not post any rude or insulting comments.  I've had to deal with too many of them in the past few days, and I don't need any more...  I won't hesitate to block people that are rude.)

The fanbase is a example of how bitter a group can get after years and years of the game-publisher just not living up to their expectations. Rushing games out, scrapping good ideas for new 'innovative' ones, some frankly disturbing plot elements and (re)design choices... Honestly, Most people are just fed up with it. Sega isn't helping matters either, refusing to stick with a solid formula and over-hyping their games like crazy to the point where nothing could live up to it (see: Duke Nukem Forever).

In the end, have your own opinion. Are the games trash? Are they heaven sent? Is Sonic going to die as a franchise or will it rise like a phoenix? That's not really something we can predict, so I say just take your own ideas and roll with them. I mean, I do, and I'm one of a limited few that actually has fond memories of both Sonic 06 and ShadowTH! XD

Thanks for the comment, mate.  Nice to know that you have my back.

But it;s still frustrating, seeing as how whenever I voice my opinion, that;'s enough for people to hate my guts...

The ones throwing the verbal abuse are only making a statement about themselves. All fandoms deal with the same problems, there's no denying it. So instead of arguing with the thick layer of YT scum, get a friend to talk about the fandom in person. Don't let it get to you.

That's a good idea.  But unfortunately, I don't really have that many offline friends, since I'm a bit of a recluse by nature.  There's only one guy that I keep regular contact with, and he doesn't play Sonic games, since they're too fast for him to handle.

Well in my honest opinionb the people who put these latest Sonic games just are whoring him out for profit and not for the love of the game. And with any fanbase on the internet, there are trolls who shit on anyone and try to make others join in their rants as well as those who only care for their views as well. Just keep a thick skin when dealing with those individuals and block those that speak pure poison.

Well personally, I think that Sega is doing much better for themselves in the game department lately.  Colours and Generations were great, I thought Lost World was really underrated, and I've thoroughly enjoyed season 1 of Boom.

I do block when I can, but I always get this feeling that if I block someone, then they'll take it as a sign that they won the argument, and that will only encourage them to start more fights.

In my experience, if anyone wants to find flaws in someone or something they CAN with no problem. As sad as it's true, the internet is full of trolls and haters who won't hesitate to kick on you while you're down. I know exactly how you feel, being targeted for being different is hell I can tell that. I was bullied through most of my school years so I know how you feel. I know it can be tough, but the best advice I can give is to ignore them, just like a boulder, let their words flow past your ears like the water in a river. Also, the old saying "don't feed the trolls" still applies to this day.

There will always be naysayers/haters who take things to extreme levels and only see nothing but negativity instead of just enjoying things and as such, they'll take it out on people who don't agree with their POV. And unfortunately that's just how it is these days. Don't let them get to you. Remember, there are just as many people out there who will side with you against such backlash. Hope this helped.

It does, actually.  It's good to know that there are people here who have my back.  (And on an underage furry porn site of all places.  XD)
