2Blog - Sonic Unleashed Review

by
These reviews are pretty routine by now, yeah? In general, you know if I bothered to review the game, I like it on some level. (well, this year, for the Sonic games, anyway) Unleashed is a game that had to grow on me, much like Lost World. Probably because both of these games are a bit harder for me than most Sonic games.

It's the daytime stages that give me grief here. If I wind up with the annoying E rank, it's on a daytime stage (I got 3 E ranks this go-round, it's particularly annoying due to the mocking music they play >:( ) You'd think I'd be better at this, what with having already played Colors and it being essentially the same, but... Unleashed is a bit less precise in its controls, I find. Not to mention there's more of those dreaded chasm deaths... and running on water segments that feel more like an exercise in luck than anything else. (Adabat is a nightmare, I tell you!) Also, late in the game I die on those random-button-input ramps because they give you like, 2 seconds to input 5 buttons. Glad they did away with that in Colors & Generations...

Honestly, though, I don't find myself boosting as much as people seem to think you end up doing. If you want an S rank, sure, and for water-running, yeah. Well, there are these segments with giant robots and flying laser-shooting robots as well that are kinda built for boosting. I don't mind doing it in those places where you NEED to. When you don't need to, I just don't. I'm content to just NOT get an S rank. The more annoying control thing to me is that this is the one game in the series that maps the homing attack to a separate button from the jump button. That's very confusing when you've been playing other Sonic games.

I've been continuing the same Unleashed file for a while. This time I finally maxed the Werehog's combat level! (the stat that gives him his combo-moves) With all his attacks at my disposal, Werehog combat was more fun than usual (though I basically just tap buttons at random to get different results XD). I enjoy the Werehog stages although they are a bit too long... also, we can really do without the tightrope walking segments, which ruin Empire City and Eggmanland's Night segments. On the other hand, the Werehog is where the treasure hunt aspects of this game shine. I still keep finding secrets every time I play this game! (this time I found an Art Book in addition to a handful more Sun & Moon medals) I remember collecting all the videotapes, and though I probably needed the internet to accomplish that, it was pretty fun tracking them down.

The bosses in this game are pretty fun, too...until you get to Dark Gaia. What were they thinking with that weird temple-golem-thing?? It's such a pain getting past that portion of the battle...and then the Super Sonic part is fairly easy...as long as you don't choke on the inescapable random-button-input part.

Obviously, you'll expect I hate the Tornado segments based on what I'm saying about random-button inputs. Oddly, this was the first playthrough that I didn't die on either Tornado level. I seem to ALMOST have the buttons down XD

The plot is pretty nonexistant, though. Look at those videotapes, they're basically ALL cutscenes of Sonic placing emeralds at the temples. That's just about it. I suppose there's a lot of misadventures with the random characters in the hub areas...but who really cares about that? I never even finished all those side missions, apparently. (though the incomplete missions might actually be for the hot dog vendors...also a pointless and annoying side-quest.)

Still, I enjoy the ride every time I play this one...
Well, I'm having a hard time closing out this review, so I'll end by saying... thank god Eggman rebuilt Orbot and gave him a less annoying voice chip. Even if it made no difference due to the introduction of Cubot. Even if the new Orbot seems much less effective as a lackey than the original. Even tho-- *bricked*
