My explanation on Art-Trades

Greetings mons.

Today I’m going to discuss and rant on a bit about a subject that popups with me sometimes.

One of my hobbies is to art trade. I enjoy it for multiple reasons. And while I always try to be as nice, fair and respectful to the artists I trade with as I reasonably can… But like all stuff in life sometimes things don’t workout as planned and even drama can happen. What do I mean by that? Well let me explain… Over time there’s something I noticed… probably half the artists out there don’t understand what a art trade actually is. Sure they all think they do… but many don’t really. The people who have it wrong think a art trade is simply giving gift art to each-other… and that it’s just merely a fun thing to do between real commissions… Sure if both artists in a trade want to look at it that way then that’s fine and whatnot… but that still isn’t a correct opinion on it in general especially when including other people who are not close friends that may view it differently. In-truth a trade isn’t really much different from a commission, it’s NOT gift art… The very word “trade” means a exchange for desired goods, and in this case you are exchanging work for work. It’s another form of payment for work. Whether or not people want to treat art trades as a more casual form of a art deal is up to them, but they shouldn’t expect everybody else to think of it as they do.

Because I can only barely begin to tell you how obnoxious it is when I just ask for a few edits on a art made for me… or sometimes when I plain didn’t like the whole results and they tell me “It’s just a trade, you shouldn’t ask for changes or a redo, it’s rude! You should just be thankful I did it for you whatsoever!!” And my answer to that is… Absolutely No… What truly is wrong here is not giving a hoot if the person you are trading-with truly likes it or not, not respecting them or their characters. and trying to come up with 100 excuses on why the trade itself or how they draw the characters doesn‘t matter… And lets not forget when a artist basically demands the displeased client to like it, or otherwise the artist will throw a childish tantrum at the client… even sometimes ignoring the client from that point-on pretending they don’t exist… regardless if they were a friend or not. Seriously grow up a bit people. Boo-hoo the client didn’t like the art or asked for a few changes… But soooooo bloody what? Unless the client are flat-out insulting you or asking for waaaay to much… otherwise stop bawling already and just suck it up dude! It’s not the end of the world or anything to be angry at the person for… seriously. And I really don’t support anybody being super rude to anybody or their work, however some people really need to learn to accept little criticism especially when doing something for somebody else.

End of the day I want to trade/commission with artists who’ll have fun and enjoy it, sure… but also I want them to have little respect for me and my characters and the work itself. And not go haywire on me or anybody if it doesn’t all perfectly workout occasionally. I’d prefer to pass over any melodrama thanks.
