Looking for a new laptop

Hello all

First off again appologies for not being arround, in addition to the new company that took over my work space running me ragged, the subject of my deleted post came true and I had to have my 20 something year old cat put to sleep on my birthday no less.

well that was a kick to my hearts dick...

Anyway I'm recovering and in the meantime I wanted to ask you folks opinion on something since I'm about as tech savy as a gold fish

I'm afraid my Acer aspire 7739z is probably on it last legs,  Its battery for one is dead, and it putters and chokes trying to watch youtube videos from time to time and It cant even run pokemon uranuim.  I'm sure a number of the slow downs could be fixed with a factory reset but it is at least a 6 year old machine so I'm thinking of upgrading, and my old lappy into a dedicated writing, and porn storage machine.  (one reason I've not gotten much done is its not the most comfortable to type where I use my laptop so If I had a dedicated writting space set up for comfort I may get more work done)

I'm looking at a HP Pavilion 17-g199cy for just under 300 dollars on tiger direct and wanted your folks opinion on if it would be worth it.  I just had to buy a car for workso 300 is just about my budget

I do like that the hp ha a quad core rather then the duel core of my acer, and a terabyte hard drive but I get distracted by newer and shiny so what do you folks think?

here are the specs

Just being honest here? I would not get an hp or dell machine. I used to work for a major retailer of theirs and you'll see problems. Same for a Toshiba in the same price range (shitty hds they fail fast). I'd go for a lenovo if you have to go that cheap or just save up for something more decent. I'd also probably get the lenovo off their website if possible to avoid some of the crud you'd have to go through at most retailers though tiger direct I 'think' is slightly better about it. That said I didn't work for them so I can't say for sure.

I've had some bad experiences with HP's and dells myself so I was hesitant to consider it,   what do you think of Asus machines?  I honestly don't know much about how to read these sort of specs Igey lost

Asus is generally better than an hp or dell of the same money and I've had the company treat me and my buddies pretty well. That said they 'usually' don't have a 300 model. MSI makes some very nice computers too but the main issue there being the support's....soso. Mostly I think because they're kinda small so hunting down drivers can be a bit of a chore.

Hey bunny,

it all depends on what you're wanting to do with the laptop. $300 is a general purpose laptop, internet, email, document creation, maybe some flash or minor games. The performance isn't going to be the best, it'll take a little bit of time to open things up and load, but it's still going to be a functioning computer if all you intend to do is simple generic tasks. The only thing I can recommend is get an extended warranty. New devices come with a standard 1 year, but it's uncanny how often after that 1 year is up, something will break, the hard drive, the motherboard, or the display, keyboard... and it's worth the extra bit of money to have extended parts and labor coverage.

If there are things you're planning on doing with the laptop outside of general use, I'm happy to look at the specs and give you a professional opinion on if that laptop can work for what you need.

Happy to help you any way I can!

one of the reasons I liked this one was it was a quad core so I can play some newer games.  Like X-com  my current laptop can handle it but it chugs.

What I'm looking for is really something I can play recentish games on,  do some video edditing and use after affects.  I'm not expecting a high gamming laptop but maybe play vanilla skyrim or xcom.  I found some Asus quad core laptops with intel chipsets around the same price  but they have 500 gig hard drives rather then the terabyte this one had

Okay then, good, I thought there might a desire to do some gaming with this one here.

Check this out then http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/?gid=2202&grap...

This website will allow you to put in your hardware data and the game you want to play and see how well it all stacks up. You might think that because the specs say you're getting a Radeon with 4 GB of memory that this is enough to do gaming on. Fact it, it really is not. Quad core is better than dual core, it means it can handle more simultaneous instructions at a time, and will be better performance wise than a dual core, but still the power and clock freq of the CPU and how fast it can work is the other thing. this is a 1.8 Ghz chip. Ehhhh? *does the wishy washy hands motion*

So gaming with this one as you're wanting to do with it, playing 'recentish' games, it will always depend on the game you're wanting to play, but this is a $300 laptop, not built for gaming.

I recommend before any purchases, to check out this here  http://www.game-debate.com/can-I-run/?EA   and see if the hardware is able to run the games you want to play. :) XCom being a turn based game, you dont "need" high FPS to be able to play it clearly, so, the fact that it chugs may be well enough for you.

I truly hope this helps inform ya bunny *cheek licks!*

LOL funnily enough after I posted that last one I remembered a website titled "can you run it" which allows you to scan your hardware and you can select a game to see if you can run it

I plugged in the laptop specs for the ones I was looking at now the Asus ones I saw were unable to run a number of the games I was looking at.   But the pavillion could run everything I plugged into including games I never would play.  but the ones I want to try like Warhammer Total war, witcher 3, or fallout 4 would be able to run no problem on the pavillion

i'm terribly sorry you had to put your cat down.  I had to put my dog down a couple of weeks ago, and of course it hurt terribly.  it wasn't the first time I had to put a pet down, but it always hurts.
