Gene Wilder was one of my earliest favorite actors. As a kid, I searched out films that he was in (I saw his face on the cover) at a video store, then promptly rent it. I did not get most of the jokes at the time, but I still enjoyed them. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory was the first film I ever deliberately recorded in full off television. I saw it one night for the first time on the Disney channel, and when I saw that it was going to be on one night later, I got a VHS tape and recorded it.
The Producers was the first Gene Wilder movie for me. That scene with him and Zero Mostel at the beginning is one of THE SINGLE FUNNIEST moments EVER captured on ANY medium!

I also recall a 1975 Sherlock Holmes comedy, The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother, in which Gene Wilder played the roll of Sigerson Holmes. I've recently looked it up on Wikipedia to get the details, being it was so long ago I saw it.
I remember one funny dialogue on that movie...Sherlock Holmes and an assistant were at a social event where they were wearing tuxedos. They broke away from the event to go gain forced entry into a nearby mansion to find clues for a case they were working. When they broke a glass pane on a door to get in, they were caught by their adversaries. One of the adversaries asks, "What do you think you are doing?". Sherlock answers, "Oh we're the window repairmen". An adversary asks, "At night?...And wearing tuxedos?". Sherlock answers, "Yes. We're a high class glass company". An adversary asks, "Oh?" Sherlock further says, "Our company slogan is Glass with Class". Then Sherlock's assistant adds, "You bet ya ass".

Back in high school, I did a competitive acting extra curricular activity. Junior year, myself and a friend did a scene from The Producers. The scene where they first get the idea you could make more money with a flop than with a hit. We went pretty far with that.... always got lots of laughs..
