Strange things

Replacement modem is failing already (that part isn't isn't surprising, had to buy a cheap old model that tends not to last long since new ones cost an arm & a leg)
But the odd thing is recently it's download speed is randomly far exceeding what should be possible.
I've noticed the limit being 3, 5 and 8 MB/s..
Only up to 3 meg service is available out here, plus I can only afford the 600Kbs service (3M would cost $40 more)
Not sure if that's related to the thing severely overheating, but I'll need to buy another one soon because the random stalls - overheating and frequent disconnections is thee sign of these things dying.
(which is one of the reasons why I'm asking donations lately, I can't absorb this shit again already)

Another bizarre coincidence, those amusement ride disasters lately, like a day after I posted something similar.
And I could go on about travel phobias but bleh.
But those can be chocked up to idiocracy, things getting so bad that people think safety regulations are a bad thing.

And other things but I forgot. -.-

It's probably a sign of the hub failing, do these network speeds come in bursts and then quickly return to normal?  I'm happy to see you're still going.  I want to help you so bad but I'm barely making it myself >.<

What do you mean by hub?
A few days ago the connection just kept stalling, then disconnecting alot, then noticeable overheating. This happened with related models I had. Found out when the previous one failed last year that it's a common and probably intentional flaw with modems, they overdrive the microprocessors and don't even bother putting heatsinks on them.

Seems to be slowly going back to normal, but the maximum sustained speed kept changing, I think it was at one time at 12 megs judging by how fast an archive downloaded. Hanging around 2Mb/sec now.

Well, by the way things are going, I won't be around much longer without help. No spare resources left, one thing like losing electric or the net will cause a cascade and I can't come back, and no where to go.
Trying to not get discouraged but I really need some good news for once.

Did you buy the modem from you isp or a computer parts shop? ISP tend to be exceedingly cheap in making/buying them, then give them away free or sell them for waaay to much.

I've seen signs of planned obsolescence in the AT&T DSL modems.  They tend to die after one year, right on the dot.  Such reliable unreliability...  After the third modem, decided to just stick to after-market DSL modems, and the one I bought after my last AT&T DSL modem died is still ticking after a couple of years.

It's At&t, giving people a difficult time is what they do best.
First two times I asked them to send replacements, but that takes forever, they demand you do tests and go through a checklist of stuff even a dipshit could rule out beforehand, have to send the old ones back first, and they give double talk on if it's free or they might charge like $120. Then wait 3 weeks to get it.
It's been easier to just order the same models from like Walmart, they're cheap but don't last long, I can't afford a new one since they cost alot plus I have no way of knowing if they would work because it's hard to know if it's the type supported in the area, they have freggin regional lockouts on modems.

If you're alright with used, this model is apparently a good one, and only $20 (including shipping)

Thanks but that appears to be a bit vague on being a router or modem or both, but that's for cable. I still have a probably functional cable modem but no fucking way I'm paying around $150/mo for internet - they still demand full cable packages with it.

Plus I've found it best to not buy anything critical as used if I can only get one.

I know of several models that work and only cost about $15 to 30 unused since they're outdated and known shortlived, But I have virtually no discretionary spending in recent years thanks to utility costs increasing so I can't even afford that until my other bills are caught up >_<
