I normally do not like to create such types of journals, but I'm on a bit of medical trouble and I honestly do not know what else could I do for now (as I have a limited timeframe to maneuver).
As some of you know, I suffer from very profound hearing loss. I entirely depended on reading lips (which I only can in Spanish) until I was gifted with a Cochlear Implant device. Of the brand Cochlear and model Nucleus Freedom.
This device has helped me monstrously to hear, understand and improve in every aspect of my life in the past 12 years. Including graduating, getting a decent job and socialize.
Unfortunately; the device is now obsolete by 2 generations and getting more expensive to maintain. So I have been saving all the money I could muster into purchasing USD currency to be able to purchase the current generation, called the Cochlear Nucleus 6.
Now you might be wondering why I am purchasing USD currency. So here’s the fact list in a very readable format:
• The Nucleus Freedom is now 2 generations obsolete, almost 15 years old. The current Generation is the N6.
• I do not live in the USA, but I can travel and also have a family member nearby.
• Currently I’m paying a very expensive and overpriced guarantee extension every year of 950 USD a Year plus 16% tax (almost 400 USD more than the US counterpart, and has worse service) to get the basic guarantee work. Does not include ‘wear and tear” parts.
• Parts and accessories needed to make the device work correctly, are also severely overpriced (A telecoil antenna costs 175USD in USA. In my country it costs 350 plus 16% tax).
• Batteries! I always have to buy them from the USA, they cost 5x times if I purchase them in my country.
• I cannot purchase parts in the USA because my device is “tied” to my country’s monopolistic service provider (Trust me… I tried, they have you locked down based on the serial # of your implant).
• The N6 has a retail price of 9,250 USD in the USA, in my country it costs 13,500 USD plus 16% tax (an outright robbery).
• I have a 500 USD discount certificate for the N6. I also had the opportunity to get 2,000 USD for my older freedom unit. Unfortunately the trade-in offer (which was not announced at all) expired mere 20 days ago. (I am trying to contact several Cochlear staff to see if they can make an exception)
• I have a part of the 9,250 USD in cash and the rest I will pay with a credit card offer from my bank. This bank offer expires in 20 days.
