I am asking all artists to participate in a Spartan Shield challenge.
The challenge: You are given a 48" diameter disk of bronze to design and color.
You can put anything on it, from a highly stylized gryphon to a life sized fly (both designs allegedly on real shields)
You do not need to post why you designed this shield, unless you want to.
The History of the Hoplon (Spartan shield) as I know it:
Each shield was custom designed by the Spartan himself or by an artist he paid.
These massive round shields were given to Hoplites (Spartan warriors) upon graduation from military academy.
They were constructed of many layers of wood and topped with a sheet of bronze.
The shields were very heavy and expensive to reproduce.
